What's more Crohn's-friendly bleached or unbleached (Enriched All Purpose Flour)?

I've got to do some crohn's-friendly baking, can someone suggest which type of flour (bleached or unbleached) seems more Crohn's-friendly. Thanks in advance.

Hi One, sorry for the late response. :)

I'm no baker but was reading up on the differences between the two. Bleached flour is just flour that was bleached chemically to speed up the process for sales while unbleached bleaches naturally and uses no chemicals. So my guess out of the two would be unbleached.

wheat is one of the most likely contributors if not cause or causative factor of all autoimmune disease (through increased intestinal permeability).

"Based on our results, we concluded that gliadin activates zonulin signaling irrespective of the genetic expression of autoimmunity, leading to increased intestinal permeability to macromolecules."

Gliadin, zonulin and gut permeability: Effects on celiac and non-celiac

interpreted by rob wolf
"Gluten attaches to the transpost molecule, CXCR3. This causes a release of zonulin which disolves the tight junction between intestinal epithelial cells (enterocytes) and THIS opens the door for autoimmunity and systemic inflammation."

That and being food for the bad bacteria, better to leave it right off the menu.

If you want to help your friend introduce him/her to paleo

I would side with Hugh on this one. Are you sure your friend can have wheat flour at all? Some with Crohn's are fine with it, but many aren't. I would double check first!

@hugh & @Charleigh - Any suggestions for wheat-free & paleo-friendly flour substitutes? Thank you.

Peanut flour is good and full of protein. I use it when I make banana bread. If your friend has peanut allergies then you could try using almond flour.

Blanched almond flour or coconut flour. You might want to ask about their particular diet though as Crohn's can vary from person to person.
