Episodes of nausea and vomiting with IBD? Also, Accutane links to IBD?

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with IBD back in 2009 - originally diagnosed as UC but complications I've had since have lead me to believe it may be Crohn's. For years my IDB was in remission through good diet, exercise and lifestyle change (reducing stress), but for the last 2 years I've had a particularly debilitating problem re-occur.

I get extremely nauseous and eventually start vomiting. It usually starts in the middle of the night while laying down. The vomit is just a yellow stomach bile mixed with mucus. This is usually accompanied by diarrhea at first until my system is empty of any food. It can last 4-5 days just vomiting bile up to 8x per day. The nauseousness is extremely debilitating and I miss a lot of work due to it. These episodes or "flare ups" seem to happen quite regularly - every 3-5 weeks.

Once the flare up is done, I usually feel good for a few weeks before the nauseousness seems to creep back in. It's almost as though my body is slowly poisoning itself. I've heard that the Gastroduodenal version of Crohn's can cause nausea / vomiting. Anyone have any similar experience to this?

I've had colonoscopies before and the last one I had was during remission (2+ years ago) so everything looked OK. I'm waiting on a scope for the Docs to go in the other way and check my stomach.

Also, I unfortunately took Accutane when I was 17. I've heard that there are some fairly strong links between taking this drug and IBD. I'm in Canada and they've stopped prescribing it here because of this link. Anyone else hear of this?

Thanks for reading! It's nice to have a group of people that won't bat an eye to describing some of these things that would likely turn 90% of the populations stomach.

Sorry to hear you are not well currently.

Isotretinoin seems to be linked with ulcerative colitis but not with Crohn's, other data (those that U.S. doctors refer to) says both Crohn's and colitis can be a result of isotretinoin or, at least, become worse while on isotretinoin. You might want to look into some study results, I haven't checked for it, but there should be something on pubmed.gov. Bear in mind that also ibuprofen and (some say that) paracetamol can damage the intestinal lining (paracetamol is controvers). It's always to make clear statements to reason and effect, you would normally need identical twins that have the exact same progression of symptoms and of the disease but one takes isotretionoin, while the other doesn't. You see, I'm not a fan of "xy leads to yz", it's so hard to make clear statements.
In doubt, less medication could provoke less side effects.

I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. I hope your doc gets to the bottem of this, have they also checked for hernia/gerd?
