Well...I was wondering, since Crohns has so many negative aspects to it, I was wondering if any of you have ever used it in a positive way?

To get out of something, get something you couldnt otherwise, etc etc?

Ya...so answer away!

i use it to get out of food that i dont like hehe or events that i dont want to go to lol

no not really , if ive had a few drinks (hehe) sometimes i arrange to go some where and cant be bothered i say im not feeling good to get out of it ,

I have before.

In my last year of highschool I got out of doing final exams because I was feeling pretty tired around then. I could have probably written them anyways, but it was just much easier to not have to worry about them.

More recently I have had tests and exams deffered for periods of time, but I really was not able to write these things at the time, so I do not consider it me taking advantage of the situation.

o all the time-she says without a trace of guilt-secretly i call it 'Playing the crohns card!'

and do i care?-not a jot!
people are so blinkin insistant when they want you to do sruff for them or with them-mrs anti socail i am!
hahahaha

lol Kitty ..Probs like Donna when i dont want to go somewhere i mabye use it as an excuse not to go.

ya Im sure I have. even though I missed every friday afternoon last summer to get an MTX injection, I still kind of like leaving work early every friday and going to the cottage early. so getting out of work sometimes, I like that! and have prob called in sick a few times when Im sure I could have coped.

Ive always wondered if others did this..nice to know :)
I dont make a habit of it, but it sure is useful sometimes!

Sometimes if I do not want to eat something I say I cannot eat it because it will make me sick.

I also sometimes say that I am to sick to go out with my friends when all I feel like doing is staying at home and sleeping.

I have a few times to get out of things but that is usually when I'm not feeling 100% anyway.

hehe I definately have!!

I was stopped for speeding and explained to the policeman I had bowel disease and really needed to get home. I think the thought of me explaining any more was enough to let me go with a warning !!!

We go through enough with this without getting something good out of it now and again.

Maybe the policeman just fancied you Joanne and let you off because of your looks!

I did use it alot when I was younger to get out of going to school and occasionally at uni to get extensions to projects. Can't say I've used it as an excuse since then though.

I've had similar experiences as mikey here. There were classes that I actually had to finish in the summer because of getting sick April/May in high school. They deferred the material and exams and I'd take the finals later. Home tutoring can be pretty cool, but it's a double edged sword. I had a math tutor that just did not teach the material well, and I got a D on the final. I fought with them and just said "Hey, look, what's diff with this scenario? Yeah, ok, I was sick. But I was sick all year and got As. Now this new math home tutor comes around, and I get a D. You do that math." Pun intended.

LOL you reckon? i doubt i!! ...if I was having a 'real' crohnie day there'd be no chance for sure!

got out of jury duty

doctor wrote note got out of jury duty ...shew
Imagine in the middle of a trial and asking to stop to have a potty break or just jump and run as usual after eating.

Oh yes, stress makes me hurt, I just remind people of that (before I get stressed) so they take responsibility for things and not leave them to me.

similar experience

one time i got pulled over and i had been drinking, and i told the officer i have crohn`s and that alcohol affected me really bad, i looked like i was over the limit and he was like, i understand... i don`t know if that was to my advantage, but i was scared as hell

Not me.. Not yet anyway... And before anyone thinks I'm taking some high moral stance here, let me set the record straight... I don't simply out of old fashioned fear & superstition... I got this odd sense that somewhere, someplace, sometime... karma kicks in... What goes around, come around... And if I use my illness to get any special treatment, favours, what have you.. that I'll pay a steep price someday..

So, anyone else here that superstitious?

As far as I'm concerned, I'm already paying the price living with Crohn's.

Well I don't know why I voted no! Oh well, but lets see! YEp I definetely do, all the time! Dont' like to do things with the other half!

Or how about to win a fight? You know, spouse: "blah, blah" and you:"well I have a chronic illness!" You win? Doesn't work for the few couples we have here with both partners having Crohn's. That would have to de-evolve into how many surgeries and numbers of pills a day kind of thing, too nit-picky for the dramatic fight finisher!

I Have!!!!

I have so used Crohn's as an excuse for not doing things i don't want to!!

I believe it makes us suffer so badly, we should use it to our advantage!!!:

Muhahaha Thats the ticket Gem!!

Take a bad situation and make it better, gotta love it

I've thought about using it to my advantage but I think the guilt would end up killing me in the long run. I do have a conscience.

Have'nt used it to my advantage as knowing my luck if I did I'd probably have a flareup

i never have had used my illness as an excuse, but i sure could have done with this excuse, it would have saved me getting another 3 points on my licence for speeding.
but on a serious note, why lie to get out of something? when we are really ill no one will believe you? just a note of warning. regards sharon x

I have used it to control my weight not to trigger a flare up but lets just say start loosing a pound or two.

how can you make yourself ill on purpose? this disease is bad enough without deliberatly making yourself ill. sharon

Cog, if you mean not eating to lose a couple of pounds, think about it. Our bodies go through so much with this awful disease..it needs all the nourishment it/we can handle. Neglecting to eat to lose a couple of pounds when you have Crohn's is not a good idea..IMHO.

I don't know for sure but not eating in order to lose weight may actually cause a flare.

Best to stick to a healthy diet, and exercise more :)

Just had to use the trump card ... Hubby got asked to stay in Afghanistan for an extra three months till October...I said to use the CD as a reason to come home on time in July - it worked (whew). He has been away since pretty much Sept 07 training and I was dx'd 2 days after he left in Jan for the on site tour. Seemed liked a good time to throw in the info to his boss. But otherwise, have held really tough and not using it to avoid anything else in my life...

yep ive used it to my advantage before
if my friends invite me out and i just cant be bothered ill sometimes say my crohns is acting up and it wud b safer if i stay in. the same goes for some other things i really dont want to do too. abit sneaky but hey we deserve some perks!

ive never used it in a big way to get out of say doing a test at school or letting down mates when ive said ill go out with them then decide id rather not. i think its alright do get out of doing the odd thing but never alright to use it alot and for any reason as it makes us all look bad. i dont no about you but im always worried about going out with people as i never know when nature may call! sometimes if theres something scheduled where i will be out of my house for a long time i get quite scared and cancel because its just too embaressing for me.

i often find if i do cancel because of crohns it is because im scared of what might happen not just because i cant be bothered.

I have used it when it was true, such as when I'm too sick to go out with friends or go to work, but otherwise, no.

I refuse my friend's pity and hate it when people try to use it as an excuse for me.

I'm sick, fine. I'll manage, even though I sometimes don't want to.

I have used it to get out of going out when everybody wants to go to a resturaunt that I love and know I won't be able to eat anything on the menu... :) but I'm still not benefiting from it, just get to sit home and eat something boring and imagine what I would have eaten if I never had crohn's...

i have used it occaisionally... but it has been when ive actually been ill or too tired to do anything..
