There are a couple of posts about Kratom, but I wonder if it doesn't deserve a thread? It is a legal, herbal pain-killer with a large number of alkaloid constituents. Smoked, it smells remarkably like marijuana. There is not a lot of research on it, so conclusions are probably subjective. In a post, someone mentioned it has recently been criminalized in Thailand where it had been used for centuries. I wonder if criminalization is necessarily evidence that it is dangerous, eg. the criminalization of marijuana? I don't believe it is toxic except perhaps at extremely high levels. The same posterer indicated there might be long term liver issue. Is that not the case with almost every drug, as the liver seems to be where the body cleans itself? While I think it is addictive, I don't believe it is in the same universe as opiates on that account, which people in flares are forced to use in such quantities for so long that addiction/withdrawal is a major issue. Might it be a valid alternative for a 'natural' pain killer in areas where marijuana is illegal?

It is also frequently cited as a substance which assists in opiate tapering. Has anyone tried it for that?

I am not a Crohn's sufferer, but my 'Crohn's person' has used it in tea form and found it helps ease pain in the gut.
