really interesting link, thanks Benson.

"EEGs show that we are biphasic sleepers with two alertness dips - one at night time and one mid-day." - that hit a note with me, i always have an 'energy dip' early afternoon.. and if i happen (rarely) to be curled up in a comfy chair at that time of day, i will nod off into a short but very deep sleep.

My dip is first thing in the morning. NOT a morning person, takes about 2 hours or so to get the brain going, I'm like the undead until then.

You know, I typed another one of my crazy exhausted late night rants (5 paragraphs this time. I really have a lot of steam to blow off.) and then I decided that it's just plain annoying so I deleted it. I think the simple fact that I'm writing that kind of thing should speak for itself.

Anyway, to extract the only useful bit out of what I wrote: My current problem is really more a matter of not being able to stay asleep. If I'm woken up I can't go back to sleep so I get about 4 hours of sleep per day and then have to force myself to stay up and maintain my bed time so that it doesn't cause me to sleep at work.

I've never really liked sleeping. I can remember in elementary school I would wake up in the middle of the night to do my homework. When I was a teenager I went through a period where I only slept once every two days because I felt that sleep was a waste of time when there were so many interesting things I could do.

These days I try to get as much sleep as my body needs. If I'm not getting enough sleep I can be a bit grouchy and start getting headaches. I definitely get the mid-day dip mentioned in the article. At some point in the afternoon I start to feel like I could fall asleep, but unless I'm really sick and physically exhausted as well I can't nap.

I love the night. It's nice to sit down write, or pick up my guitar and devote my time to what I'm doing uninterrupted. Everyone is asleep and even the dogs don't want anything from me. In a perfect world I think I would probably sleep from 3am to 11am.
