I've recently had a scope which shows 5cm of large ulcers and 5cm of inflammation in a different area from the ulcers. I just received a letter from my GI to say that sample I handed in showed a modestly elevated level of 290mcg/g. I take it this means it is not too high? What is normal?

Thanks guys x

Hi.

I'm not sure what normal is (I think its <100) ??? I know it indicates inflammation but that is already confirmed.

Sorry I can't be much more help.

Normal depends on the normal reference range of the lab you use.

For example Labcorp is below 50, I think Quest labs is below 167.

With simmering inflammation my son's level was 300, severe flare 1700. The simmering level was backed up by colonoscopy and MRE done at the same time.

You would need a copy of the test results to see the ranges they use of normal to high. Based on your doctor's letter it doesnt sound awful but something to keep an eye on.

UK reference range is 50-100 borderline- repeat 4 weeks
>100 abnormal, >150 likely IBD.
Adults tend to have lower levels than children, on average you get higher levels the more distal (nearer your tail end) your disease is. So if you have small bowel disease you on average would have lower levels than if you had proctitis or distal colitis.

Hi I have recently been told i need an MRI and colonscopy due to high calprotectin levels in stool sample but i dont know the exact number, just that it was "more than slightly raised". In the UK below 50 is normal. Over... 120 or 150 i think, is considered high and sign of inflammation and possible IBD

Thanks very much, really appreciate all your comments. It saves me bugging our very bust IBD nurses xxx
