My 15 year old son was diagnosed with UC almost 2 years ago. He failed all the medical treatments after a short remission with Remicade. He had a total colectomy in July 2012 and his takedown in Nov 2012. He is 5 months out and we have been struggling with pouchitis for 2 months. We think he had a bacterial overgrowth after surgery prior to the pouchitis diagnosis. He had a brief remission with his pouchitis while on Cipro and Metronidazole but after one week of doing great, the symptoms returned while he was still on the meds. He is now on Cortifoam without much if any improvement. It seemed to help a little at first but seemed to get worse again while still on it. He had a pouchoscopy and biopsies. We are still waiting for a second opinion on the slides from a different pathologist. The first one thought there might be a " minute ill defined granuloma" in the small intestine above the pouch. Now we aren't sure if crohns is coming into play or not.
We are considering trying fecal transplantation for the pouchitis. I was wondering if anyone has done this for pouchitis or has information about others that are doing it. I heard Dr. Bo Shen in Cleveland is doing it but haven't talked to them yet.
