Hey everyone. I started taking Imuran last Thursday, and I was told to take 1/2 a tablet for 2 weeks then increase it to 1 for a week, then 1 and a half, etc. until I reach the desired dose.

So, exactly one week after I started taking the Imuran, I woke up 12:00 at night (Thursday night/technically Friday morning) with the worst chills I have ever experienced in my life. I could not stop shaking. My teeth were chattering like crazy. After awhile, I started getting a really bad fever, I couldn't see straight, everything was really cloudy, I was sweating but cold, and I had a horrible throbbing headache.

I went to the ER, they done xrays on me, multiple blood tests, a urine test, and gave me tylenol for my fever, a round of fluids through the IV and some toradol through the IV for my headache. My heart rate was also extremely fast, it was at 130. They basically told me that nothing came back in any of the tests and that they don't know what's causing it, to take tylenol for my fever and monitor my symptoms, and if anything gets worse to come back.

So the next morning I called my gastro dr, and she told me that it could possibly be the imuran causing these symptoms. She advised me to stop taking it for one week, and then start taking it again, and if I get the same symptoms then it is the imuran. So, today is Saturday and I still have a fever, I've been taking tylenol every couple of hours. I go from having chills, taking tylenol, to getting a full on fever, sweating it out, and it's like a cycle. I really do not feel good at all. I don't feel like I'm getting any better, and I don't know what to do anymore. I'm sweating so bad but I'm cold.

Yesterday, I had already taken the imuran in the morning before I spoke to my GI, so today is my first day not taking it. However, I'm still on prednisone, (tapered down to 30 mg) from a partial blockage that I had about a month ago. Does anyone have any advice? I'm only 20 years old, I'm living 3 hours away from home to attend university and I live by myself, I hate feeling like this and being alone!! Seems like I can't catch a break. :(

Hello there,

I'm very sorry for the delayed response and hope that you have been feeling better. Have you spoken to your GI again since posting this? Have your symptoms eased up?

I looked at some of your most recent posts strawberrys78 and it looks like you started feeling better at some point. By now you would have started the Imuran again. Did you have the same symptoms? Were you switched to something else?

Exactly that happened to me. I've never had a fever like that (103 F) every night. My GI wasmafraidmi had meningitis as I had neck pain as well but all the tests done came back normal (including CT scans). My GI took me off the Imuran and after about a week the fevers stopped and have never re-occurred.

Thank you! My GI told me to stop taking the Imuran for a week and start taking it again to see if I got the same symptoms and I did after taking just 1/2 of a pill. So she told me to stop taking it altogether. Now I'm trying to decide if I'm going to go on Humira or Remicade (not stoked about either) especially because Multiple Sclerosis is a side affect and my mother has that really bad, I don't wanna increase my risk. Decisions decisions lol.

Wow! Yes I stopped taking them for a week, got better. Started taking them again and after taking just 1/2 a pill that night I got the same symptoms!! So I stopped taking them. Now I need to go on either Humira or Remicade :(

I started the Imuran again and the first night after taking 1/2 a pill in the morning I got the exact same symptoms! I called my GI and she told me to stop taking it. Now I have to go on either Remicade or Humira.. I have to decide which one. Not even sure if I want to go on either because Multiple Sclerosis is a possible side affect and my mother has MS really bad. I don't want to increase my risk of getting that even if it's a small number, because I know how bad it is. Mom can hardly even walk. It's really debilitating. :( So I don't know what to do. I may just say screw it and take the risk and try Remicade.. I'm afraid if I don't go on another drug that I could end up getting another obstruction and have to get surgery. I've tried asacol, pentasa, imuran, and prednisone (still on right now - not a long term solution) so I don't really have many other options.
