It has been three weeks, my dd has been taking Imuran and Cipro. After two weeks she had blood test . The test is normal. Her bloody stool turns into only D. But from the third week, she has fever, stabbing back pain, short breath, having pain in breathing and very fast heart beats. We went to emergency on Monday , they did again blood test which was again normal. But she was dehydrated. So they gave her infusion (saline). At the emergency, her fever was normal. But at night, the fever comes back when she is in home. She can not eat or drink. She still has fever with all the mentioed problems. What should I do now? Today is Wednesday. Please advice me. Thanks .

It might be a good idea to get in touch with your gastroenterologist.
It could also be a side effect of ciprofloxacin.
I had a very serious reaction to cipro and was hospitalised for a week.
Don't take any chances---talk to the GI very soon.
They are best equipped to determine the causes when it comes to crohn's and other IBD.
Feel better soon both of you
Hugs and best wishes

Thank you so much My little Penguin and Trysha. I did. Yesterday, I dropped three messages in his nurse's mailbox. Today, the entire day I had been waiting for the reply back. My dd has GI's appointment on 28th of May. Do you think I should wait for the appointment or tomorrow, I should go to the emergency room again if the nurse does not call back ?

I would think it's the Cipro that's causing it. It seems to be quite a strong antibiotic - my son had to stop taking it after a couple weeks as it was giving him chest pains. If it seems alot worse just go to the emergency room - hope it doesn't get worse though.

Right now we are in the emergency room. Now my dd has high fever with all mentioed problems :(.Sascot I asked the emergency doctor to check if my dd has side affect for Cipro. They will call on-call GI. I am sincerely grateful to this forum and to all of YOU. Thanks My Little Penguin Trysha and Sascot.

Hi Tamana
Thank you for the follow up reply.
Hopefully things will go well for you both.
What a harrowing time for you and dd..
It's good that they are calling the GI on call.
Keep in touch with us and let us know of progress.
Hugs and best wishes

Yesterday we were at the emergency until 2 am. Today at 12pm, my dd's GI called to admit her at hospital. Three GIs has emergency meeting with us to treat her Crohn. They said her CD is very active and that's why she is having fever and other symptoms, although she does not have any pain. We might be in the hospital for two weeks (more or less):( Please pray .

Fever is from the immune response in crohn's disease. I had it really bad when I first had crohn's disease, I had to wrinse out my bed from sweat at night. I got terrible colds too, the sweat becomes cold and I was basically sleeping in a soaked bed every night, I could fill half a bucket of water in the morning. I never had any significant issues outside of a soaked bed though from the fever, if I looked back, the weeks of fever didn't make me feel sicker, I actually felt quite good at times.

TNF-alpha is an endogenous pyrogen, it's a fever inducer, it starts synthesis of prostraglandin which sends a signal to the brain to raise body temperature and you get the fever.

A slight fever is good during inflammation, it's a defense mechanism to kill bacteria because most bacteria have a much harder time surviving during heat, another reason is that cells are better protected from the detrimental effects of the TNF inflammation if the body temperature is slightly higher

All the nights sweats people have from crohn's disease is from the immune system inducing fever and the body trying to control temperature by sweating.

At least they are taking it seriously and trying to get the Crohn's under control. Good luck - hope things improve soon!

Hi Tamanna, My 8 yr old son was dx'd in March. He was put on Prednisone, then once on it for 4 wks we started Imuran and started to taper off the prednisone. The 1st week on Imuran, it was just 1/3 of the full dose and bloodwork looked fine. 2nd week we increased Imuran to full dose and a wk later the bloodwork showed elevated liver enzymes. Dr said not to worry, may just be his system getting used to it. Then, a couple days later the nighttime fevers began. They were high too. He was taking the Prednisone in the AM and the Imuran in the PM. The fevers would come about 5 hours after taking the Imuran and last til morning, then disappear. No night sweats like he had before dx though. This was different. The dr didn't think the Imuran would cause the fever, and thought it was due to the inflammation which had not yet gone away. But, to be sure, we stopped the Imuran and like magic NO MORE FEVERS!! We now need to start a new maintenance med. If your dr is telling you the fever cannot be from Imuran, I am here to tell you that it definitely did cause fevers in my son. Take care and let me know how it's going.

It was scary when three GIs informed us my dd's Crohn was/is out of control; not only that it has been getting worse. But the good part is my dd realizes she can not deny her CD anymore. She is having now prednisone with Imuran. They stopped the Cipro. Her fever, heart beats, Oxygen, and BP is normal now and her stool is becoming firm. Doctors believe that her Crohn was responsible for her fever. Staying hospital is not bad!! You are right Chapsmom, my fear turns into relaxation because of constant supervision.

Thanks to All :)

I'm so glad the fever, heartrate, oxy and BP is now normal! I hope the pred and Imuran work quickly for her!!

They took off her IV. She can walk now without having any instrument attach with her. Today they will check her blood and do ultrasound. After receiving the reports, they will let us know when we can go home :)

Her blood, stool, and ultrasound report is good. I am hoping to take her home at the end of this week. Thanks to all for your sincere supports, prayers and wishes :)
