WHAT an ordeal! We got there at 9am and they did her blood work to get a base line number. Then they gave her the drink which was HORRIBLE. The ladies who worked there said they don't usually do kids, because they usually can't get it down. She got it down, but it took almost an hour of crying, stomping, yelling, and gagging. She spilled a bit when she was carrying on, but they said it shouldn't matter. Drinking the drink took her almost an hour. When it was over (just the drinking) she looked terrible. She said it felt like lead in her stomach and she felt sick. BUT she did it.
Then they drew blood 30 min later, then an hour later, then another hour, and one more in another hour. So 5 pokes (3 in r arm, 2 in left) in all. She did amazing with the blood! I was so surprised. They have never heard of the buzzy bee, and had no emla cream. She didn't want it anyways, just mentioning it set her off in tears. I'm sure her arms will look terrible in a day or so. They told us to come and use ice, but she won't keep it on. Her right arm was great, but both times they took blood from her left they collapsed the vein.
She was "starving to death" by the time we left. So, at her request we stopped at *gag* McDonalds. But I figure she earned it ;)
They said our doctor would have the results by the end of next week.

I am so glad it is over! I hope she doesn't have a reaction to Macky D's. Jaedyn was sick 3 days in pain last time she ate there (french fries and shake)...

Thank you Carol. She is usually ok with McD's as long as its NOT a cheeseburger. When she eats one, she gets the worst gas and pains. She had a jr chicken and rootbeer (I NEVER buy pop). She's feeling much better now, her colour is back and she's a lot happier.

That's great that she managed to do it all! She definitely deserved that McDonalds

DevynsMom, I'm curious. Why were they doing the lactose intolerance test? I wonder sometimes if my son isn't experiencing this, but would it be allergic colitis then, or in addition to IBD? He definitely has a bad reaction to dairy though, and I've read that an untreated food allergy could cause elevated calprotectin. I'm planning to discuss with the GI at his next appt.

We never do McD's- I'm too scared of what could happen! Our only fast food is In-n-Out burger and fries.

During your son's scopes, did they find eosinophils in his biopsies? That would help answer.
about allergic colitis.

Hmmm...don't know, Farm Wife. Haven't repeated since initial scopes at time of dx, so i will ask about this at his next appt. I'm guessing GI would have checked this already then? Thanks!

Yes, Grace has eos disease also. They would have showed up in the reports . Still if dairy bothers him, you should find out.

Thank you Sascot :)
Thank you Jacqui :)

Henrietta, we did a 5 week milk free trial and then the breath hydrogen test for lactose intolerance. The reading was whacky and after talking to people in this forum I asked our doctor if the blood test is more accurate. He said yes, but they don't like to do them on kids because its a hard test. The more I think about it, the more I think she IS lactose intolerant. Any time she's had milk, she's either felt sick or had major gas. We want to rule it out.

Thanks, Devyns Mom. Do you think she is lactose intolerant in addition to having IBD, or instead of having IBD? How do they relate?

I think she's lactose intolerant in addition to IBD. She has had colonoscopy and endoscopy with biopsies that confirm the ulcerative colitis. Her IBD is under control right now, but if she eats cheese or milk, she will be full of gas. If she doesn't, she will be fine. She's had no other symptoms since November (joint pain, mouth ulcers, diarrheah etc)

Interesting...my son is the same with dairy, and the only time since his initial dx (in Jan of 2011) that he had a flare was when he ate dairy. Other than, no symptoms or signs of disease activity in his bloodwork. Maybe just wishful thinking that it could just be an allergy and not IBD...

yes, but only once when he was 2- he was hospitalized for a week while they did scopes- upper, lower, barium with small bowel follow through, mri. Doc said scopes pointed to IBD indeterminate BUT now 2 years later he is doing so well clinically doc said could be that it isn't IBD at all (then what??) or that they scoped him right at the onset of the disease activity so there hadn't been long term damage yet. This is why she wants to do scopes again. We will likely do this Spring.

Oh ok. Devynn had upper and lower twice with biopsies. The first time they gave her an unofficial diagnosis of crohn's and then last year they officially diagnosed her with colitis. From what I'm told, if a biopsy shows disease its def disease. I wish it was just a lactose problem, but she has so many other symptoms when she is flaring and the positive biopsies. I hope your son is only lactose intolerant, that would be so great.

What a terrible ordeal!! Geez! And yeah a little McD's every once in a while wont kill her! Sure hope you hear good news soon!

Poor Devynn!! That sounds horrible! She certainly had every right to be cross about it all. Hope you get some results and answers after that.

:award2:What a trooper!!!

I am amazed at what these kids are able to do.

Hopefully you will find some more answers.

Farmwife, how many eosinphils are normal with IBD and at what point do they indicate an allergy?

You all are killing me with the McDonald's stuff. I wouldn't think twice about letting Johnny have it. It helps fatten him up :D.

Have fingers crossed for end of week!! And yeah she deserved that McDonald's  x

Johnnysmom, I agree McDonalds = fattening up. We just had lunch there. Figured I could get a bunch of calories into him at one sitting and he generally will finish everything he gets from there.

Wow ! she's better than me, I would have screamed and cried too LOL.
And 5 different blood draws, my goodness :(
I bet she really enjoyed that treat to McD's!

Best of luck with the results !
sorry I wasn't on for the weekend so I'm just catching up to everyone's threads.

Thank you Johnnys mom :)

Thank you Niks :) She did deserve it! :)

Thank you T :) I would have cried too! lol She did so well with the blood draws. I thought she was going to have horrible bruising, but its not too bad.
I will update as soon as we hear from the doctor.
