My first visit to my GI is next week.I have a list of questions. My biggest concern is medications. My resection was in November and seems to have healed well. The resection was about 8 inches in my duodenum. Will he recommend anything to reduce future stricturing?I am on no medications now and feel pretty good most days.I really don't want to be on anything.I've had too much time to think between November and now.I was hoping people might share what the first visit might be like.

Most GI's do prefer to prescribe a maintenance med after surgery. This works to prevent future flares and keep you feeling well. Is there a reason you'd prefer to stay med-free? Do you have any alternative treatment plans to keep yourself in remission?

I'm worried about side affects with meds.:confused2: My medical bills are already outrageous and $ for meds just adds more stress.I'll do what I have to do to stay in remission.I do have 'obama care' insurance, but the deductible is like paying out of pocket anyway. My wife has been so supportive but the bills really worry her, spikes her daily stress level.I've altered my diet significantly and use anti-inflammatory herbs, that's my only alternative treatment so far.I haven't met this GI before so I don't know what his approach is.What meds might he suggest? Thanks for the response SarahBear!

Agreed on the maintenance meds. Talk to your GI about your financial concerns as well. Some meds are a bit cheaper than others.

Side effects are really nothing to worry about. All in all, the effects of untreated Crohn's are worse than the side effects of the medications used to treat it. The side effects listed for each medication are potential side effects. You're unlikely to have more than a few, and even those few should decrease in severity and probably go away entirely as your body adjusts to the medication. Just keep an eye on all side effects / new symptoms, write them down if you need to, and notify your doctor if you're concerned by anything, or if the side effects start to interfere with your daily life. For example, if you have severe nausea, you should let your doctor know because they can prescribe something to help. As long as you monitor your own body and keep in contact with your doctor, there's no need to worry. :)

I agree with FrozenGirl - your doctor might be able to help you find a more affordable medication. Also look into assistance programs - many medications have them.

What medications have you taken previously and how did they work for you? If you've already had surgery, you'll probably skip mesalamines and start with Imuran / 6-MP, methotrexate, or a biologic such as Humira or Remicade.

Would the SCD diet be an option for you? If your insurance doesn't help enough with your medication, trying diet might be a good option for you. Or, you could always try both. :)

 I hope you're able to find a good option without too much fuss! :)

I saw my Dr.today for a post-op visit for an inguinal hernia. He also did my resection.I shared my concerns about meds with him.He told me that since I am in remission my GI may suggest a non-steroidal med.to help me stay there. He told me that it could help prolong my remission further than if I didn't take it.He also said it wont prevent future flares.I haven't been on any medications previously.I have modified my diet quite a bit.I feel pretty good, all things considered.I have times with little energy that can come up abruptly.I take iron for anemia,vit-c and D and a B supplement.I would very much like to control crohn's through diet rather than medication.I'm open to looking at the options available.
