Flair up after 13 years

Hi -I was diagnosed in 2002 with Crohns and have had a Hartmans Procedure and now have a Colostomy bag. I am 74 years old now and have been able to eat most things in that time. Unfortunately I have now suffered a flare up which is very painful and am on prednisolone 5mg (8 a day) reducing by one per week for eight weeks. I have been taking them for 6 days and they dont seem to make much difference. My stoma is sore and swollen and really hurts when I walk. How long do these steroids take to work ?

Predisone usually works in a couple days for me, and you're taking quite a bit. I remember it elevates your mood and sense of well being, and puffs you up a bit.

Good luck, but I think everybody here has had trouble getting this damnable dis-ease under any kind of control, and then keeping the leash on. My first doc in the early 80s called Crohn's "a tiger".

I'd be just about ready to get back to my specialist, if I were you, especially if your stoma is very sore and swollen. The Prednisolone should be having an effect by now.

I'm in much the same boat as you - without the flare, that is. After having Crohn's diagnosed in the early 1970s, I had a full proctocolectomy in 2000, resulting in an ileostomy and am now 72. My GI always stressed that I should hope, but not expect, that I would get away without another major flare. So far, so good.

prednisone usually works very fast for me too, but on my last flare, it took almost 2 weeks before I started to have an improuvement of my condition. I thought I had lost response to pred and that was really scary time. But it all ended well afterwards when pred kicked in. If you are feeling worst than before pred, contact the nurse or GI, but if its similar, you could give it a couple of days. best wishes.
