Does anyone get a flaky scalp, and flaky skin on the sides of the nose which extend down to the corners of the mouth? Also thinning hair and hair loss? All these are taking place curently and were taking place before any medication!

Skin problems are common with Crohn's Disease. I am having a lot of trouble with my hands (very dry, cracking) and some sores on my head. I'm lucky to have thick hair so the sores are not noticeable. The sores come and go for me, and I haven't noticed any hair loss. My brother who also has Crohn's has thinning hair. It is unusual as our father has a thick head of hair, he's in his 60's to boot. My mother's father and brothers had full heads of hair. There is no reason why my brother's hair should be thinning, so I do think it might be a side effect from his Crohn's.

My Doc says no so I dont know what to think! No one in my family is bald either...............Just doesnt make sense! There is a huge list of symptoms Im having Andi and the list is so big that it doesnt equate to being caused by a so-called mild case of Crohns! I had Iritis as part of my onset of symptoms so maybe there is an arthritic condition as well or maybe a thyroid problem(which is what I think may be the problem)! I really need to figure this out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was going to suggest you have your thyroid function checked.

Mine was finally diagnosed underactive because my hair was thinning, dry flaky skin, extreme fatigue and muscle weakness and pain. Then I started to lose my short term memory (at 26yrs old! - am 41 now). I discovered that your thyroid has a huge impact on the other hormones in your body too. It took a year to stabilise me on thyroxine and am on quite a high dose.

My gastro consultant has told me that crohns patients are "different" in their presentation of things and so there is a need to think outside the box with them. Also that we may need higher doses of meds due to absorption issues and then monitored closely to ensure stability. So if you are clinically unwell and for instance "blood tests are normal" there is obviously something going on and its about putting the puzzle together.

Keep at them! Dont stop and give in! Let us know how you get on. Thinking of you ((hugs))

I had similar symptoms, but not thinning hair. When I started taking an Omega three supplement it was greatly reduced. I started using Krill Oil, but Fish oil would work as well.

It only took a couple of weeks to work.
