Maddie is having a Flare up once again this time she is having stomach cramps with nausea. The dr mentioned 6 MP wich scares me to death. We have an apt on the 16th for further discussion. Any advice or tips is greatly appreciated!

No worries. 6MP has been all good here and nothing to complain about. I hope Maddie is feeling better soon!

The phrase around here is that the meds are scary until you see them work. Then they look like a basket of kittens.

My son was on Azathioprine, the sister drug to 6-MP, fox six months. No side effects and one pill a day for him. Unfortunately, it just wasn't strong enough for him so we had to move on. Our GI told us he has kids who've been on it for 10+ years and he only sees them once a year at their annual check ups. So it does really work for some.

She'll be monitored very closely while on 6-MP with labs. It does take awhile (months) for it to build up in the system and work so you may be looking at pred or EN to get her in a good place before the 6-MP can take over and do its thing.

Do you have a prescription for Zofran? It's for nausea and can take the edge off on tough days.

Hope she sees some relief soon!

Sorry to hear about the flare. My son tried Aza (Imuran), the sister drug, but had a bad reaction. It was very obvious though-high fevers each night within a couple hours of taking the med. The GI monitored his blood closely and I'm sure they'll do the same for you. There are many that it works well for.

Hope you can get the flare under control. My son is on 6mp and no side effects so far. It brought his calprotectin levels down after about 3 months.

DS was on 6-mp for 8 months
But wasn't strong enough .
Unfortunately many many things can cause cancer...
Under treated crohn's however is a known evil.
We chose to fight the evil we know and hope to never see the evil we don't.

Doc do watch the blood very very closely for everything.

Hope it works
Keep in mind it can take at least 4 months to work .

I totally understand your fears. A lot of us on here have long passed 6mp or azathioprine and wish it could be that simple again. Having said that, I remember worrying about the same thing when we started azathioprine. One thing to feel good about, the kids are monitored closely when on any medication. I now worry more about ongoing inflammation causing problems.
