:sign0085:Hello everyone and Happy Thanksgiving to all I would like to start by explaining our story. Last year this time my daughter Abigail was hospitalized for 2 weeks with rectal bleeding (severe) had never had any health problems prior well we spent a week here in the local hospital with no relief of her symptoms and no DX she was then tranferred to Texas Childrens hospital where we were there thru Thanksgiving, during her stay she underwent a colonscopy and endoscopy that showed she had collitis, test were inconclusive for Crohns and UC but they are leaning more towards UC, she was put on prednisone, Asacol and prevacid which put her in remission. Well in January of this yr she flared up and was put in the hospital for another week but it was also determined that she had picked up a gastrointestinal virus while she was in the hospital her initial time in nov. well she has been in remission every since Jan of this yr and the past week she has been exhibiting symptoms of a flare of i.e. going to the bathroom frequently, abdominal pain (doubling over in pain) she began vomiting last night and when she had gone to the bathroom last night and I noticed that there was a small amount of blood present in her stool, she has been on Asacol, prevacid and 6mp for almost a yr now. We are awaiting a call from her Dr but I have a feeling I know what he is going to advise and we really dont want to spend another night in the hospital but of course he is not going to be back in his office until next week is there anything I can do to help her without taking her to the hospital. Just FYI she was 8 when she was dx she just turned 9 in oct. any advice would greatly be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to hear you daughter is poorly again :( The only I can think of that might help a little is putting her on a very bland, low residue diet. Has anything ever been mentioned to you previously in the area? One thing it may be worth looking into is enteral nutrition, I have seen here that it has shown good results in children at enducing remission. We do have a parents forum that you shoud check out as the mums and dads here may also have some great advice to give: http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=49.

I hope she can be feeling better soon, please keep us updated on how you get on.

So sorry to hear all the trouble of the past year.
My Grace is 3 and still undiagnosed.
So my knowledge is limited.
What I've read the first flare for children can take quite awhile to real bring it under control.
More wonderful parents will be along to offer support and help.
I so hope you and her don't have to spend Thanksgiving again in the hospital.
Please feel free to join the parents in the Parent's Forum.

Sorry she is not feeling well. I have to agree with Angrybird at least until you can get her to the doctor, both my husband and son have crohn's and when they are flaring low residue or EN diet seems to help the symptoms at least until we can get into the doctor without having to go to the emergency room.

Hopefully your Gi has gotten back to you.
The vomiting would be a concern for obstruction.
Definitely call your Gi since she already has a dx ER might only run tests then send her home with a follow up next week.
I second the EN ( kids boost or pediasure) until you can get a call back from the GI.

Thanks everyone for your advice her GI did call me and called her prednisone in and I had gone by the grocery store to pick her up some pediasure so I hope this helps wasnt looking forward to the steroids again but I guess whatever works...I definitely dont want to take her to the er when I already know what is the matter....thanks again everyone and Happy Thanksgiving.

So sorry to hear you lo isn't feeling well. I hope the pred px gets her feeling better real quick. It is such a steep learning curve, isn't it? It seems by the time you arrive at dx you are already having to make hard decisions about meds and such. I hope your daughter achieves remission soon!

I hope she does too and thank you....Its a huge learning curve initially her GI wanted to put her on Remicade but decided for 6mp and she has been doing well with it up until now...this website is amazing so many helpful people with some great advice.

It is a really great place full of compassionate people with great advice and some wicked humor(which is sometimes just what the doctor ordered) Please browse around the forum, check out the treatment subforum as well as all the great threads in the Parents of Kids with IBD subforum!

It was such a comforting feeling when I first arrived here, it was shortly after my son's diagnosis that I first posted but I had actually lurked for much longer. Just reading through all the experiences and advice gave me a sense of peace of sorts. I hope you stick around and add your experience and support!
