Hi all

Im still pretty new to all this, as I only got diagnosed at the beginning of this year.

I was just wondering do we fall into the group of people needing a flu jab?

It says this on the website;

The flu vaccine is offered free to anyone over the age of six months if they have any of the following medical conditions:

•chronic (long-term) respiratory disease, such as severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or bronchitis
•chronic heart disease, such as heart failure
•chronic kidney disease
•chronic liver disease, such as hepatitis
•chronic neurological conditions, such as Parkinson's disease or motor neurone disease
•diabetes
•problems with your spleen – for example, sickle cell disease, or if you have had your spleen removed
•a weakened immune system due to conditions such as HIV and AIDS, or as a result of having treatment that suppresses the immune system, such as chemotherapy

I dont think I fall into any of these catagorys but I was just wondering

i know in Ireland I fell in to a priority group and my doctor phones me about it every year.

in the US the flku shot is recommened for anyone with a chronic illness - so having UC or Crohns' qualifies you - as well as those in your household!

I'd recommend it - I have gotten it for free from my family doctor in the past as well due to Crohn's - been getting it for about 16 years now. The last 3 employers I worked for provided it to all employees at no charge.

Last year I got a letter from my GP inviting me for a flu jab because of my Crohn's. I imagine they will be sending letters out soon.

Yep, As we have crohns the Dr will want to see us and give us our yearly jab, however as you are new to the illness, you might not be on the flu jab list. if not contact your Dr, you don't want the flu on top of crohns, flu can knock healthy people out for weeks, it can kill us and for the sake of a little jab its worth getting it.

Before you get the Flu shot, you probably should read this.

The Canadian press recently broke the story that new research confirms initial findings that the flu vaccine appeared to actually increase people's risk of getting sick with H1N1, and cause more serious bouts of illness to boot.

I have not been an advocate for Flu shots for quite some time because of the ineffectiveness, but this research even surprised me.
