Someone sent me a gift basket with English Muffins and Crumpets. WTF do I do with a crumpet? Do I toast it? Put jelly on it? They look spongy. Never had one before and am at a loss.

Do I need to start drinking tea????? :)

- Amy

ooooooooo I love crumpets! I have them everyday. Toast em, better a bit burnt and crispy.
I have cheese on mine.

I love them too, shove them in the toaster until the bottom goes brown and a bit crispy then put butter over them

So thats what you are eating :ytongue:.. I love them too but rarely buy them. They take a while to toast them and I put Jam on it..soooo good. If ya dont like them Amy throw them over the pond!! (Not that I need them lol)

For the best flavour toast over an open fire and then use plenty of salted butter. Feel good food!

Mmmmm, mmmmmm toasted with butter and maybe some strawberry jam. And yes, Ames, you should have them with a nice cup of char. :)

Crumpets... think of them as a sponge with which to spread melted butter all over your chin... if you like that sort of thing.

PS... hi everyone... just checking in to make sure you're all behaving yourselves!

:bigwave:

Hiya Steve, hope you're ok?

Hey, Amy hope you love the crumpets! They are yummy smothered in heart attack material (butter)
I love butter so much!

Mmm, butter. I'm lactose intolerant but oddly butter has never bothered me. Cheese and milk kill me but I could eat butter and ice cream till the cows come home (pun intended). I'm intrigued by this crumpet thing - I wonder where I could get some crumpets around here? Mail order maybe?

Mmmmmmmm......golden toasted crumpets......loads of butter and top them off with honey, or if you're game vegemite!

Be careful of the drips though!!!

Dusty. :)

If you dont want the muffins Ill have them! :) Much prefer them to crumpets - which must be toasted and then topped with lots of butter. Anything else is a bit foreign!

WTF do I do with a crumpet?

Well if you toast it and leave it to cool, it will go hard. You can then use it as a frisbee!

Failing that, toasted hot crumpets topped with melted butter are OK. Or you could add a touch of jam and a dollop of clotted cream. Or a chocolate spread even.

I find crumpets a touch too spongy, so rarely have them. If I do have them, I like them hot and lightly spread with butter and marmite.

Washed down with some English Breakfast tea of course.

I much prefer Spotted Dick or some Devonshire scones with clotted cream and jam, washed down with some English Breakfast tea of course.

NOTE: You must use REAL butter, organic if possible - not that crappy margarine spread.

Oh, please, enlighten me.... Spotted Dick????

Cat - Wolferman's is a mail order company that has THE BEST English muffins IMHO. I got a gift basket with muffins, English muffin bread (YUM!), crumpets, scones and various spreads and some coffees. A great get well gift for an IBD patient! I am really enjoying it!

I love spotted dick and custard too. Made some jam roly poly last week which was just as good :)

Ive heard crumpets are quite easy to make yourself, may be worth trying it

Hah! My hubby found spotted dick at our local grocery store. It came in a can and it was really weird, like gooey bread with raisins in it. It looked gross! Is it supposed to come in a can or is it better fresh?

Fresh I find is better. Very easy to make. If i recall its just flour, butter, suet and raisins. And I find that birds custard is the best :)

Huh. I just did a google image search for these things... Are they the same thing as what we refer to in the states as "English muffins?" They look like it.

Hi, Joan... I'm doing all right... might post a bit more.

Anyway... back to the thread.
We also have suet in Jam Roly Poly... don't think I've had that since my school days.

I don't mind crumpets, but much prefer muffins (or English Muffins... as they are called elsewhere)... or at this time of year, Hot Cross Buns (shame about the reflux though)

On the wider pudding front... I've never had anything to beat Sticky Toffee Pudding!

Here's what I'm hearing - I am f-ed if I ever go to UK unless I like sticky and spongy things!

PS toasted up a crumpet last night and used it to deliver 2 thicks pads of butter. Will see how it works with jam tonight!

ha ha ha Amy! so funny!

I can assure you that not all Brits eat unhealthy stodge, (just me!)

Can't beat Apple Crumble and Ambrosia Custard, bloody yummy!

These days you're more likely to get curry in the UK than the traditional old favourites. Hmmm, wonders what Ames would make of Scotlands diet, like deep fried battered haggis and chips... would have to be from the Seaforth chippy in Ullapool, mind :)

I have a question: How come it's called "pudding" in the UK when it's really more like a bread? Here in the US pudding is goopy and milk-based, like a really runny custard I guess, and not bread-like whatsoever.

Beth, I'm great with Curry and all indian foods. The spices really treat me well.

Do we have any Scots on here??? Levi's 40th is next year and he wants to do a Scotch tour of Scotland. God help me, 7 nights of him breathing Scotch breath on me. I think I will book only rooms with twin beds.

I think anything tastes good deep fried, but not sure about haggis.

What else am I in for over there? I have a feeling I am going to live on fish and chips!

Cat, pudding and dessert are one and the same here which is why lots of spongy things are called puddings. I'm a Scot, but pecan pie is my favourite.
Any questions re: your trip, Ames, fire away. And you've gotta try a deep fried Mars Bar, tho I've yet to try one myself!

Ames, that would be so cool. To meet you and my 'godchild', so to speak!! And Levi can sample some of the 'water of life' up here which is what whisky is called in Gaelic. Would definitely recommend a trip around the Scottish islands.

Oh, please, enlighten me.... Spotted Dick????

Well it depends on WHO you believe:

1) It is a particularly nasty sexual disease that involves the thingummyjig of British males

OR

2) It is a particularly delicious classic British pudding, served warm with custard.

I go for # 2.

Americans seem to have EVERYTHING in a can. Worst thing I heard of was whole roast chicken in a can. WTF is that all about!

Fresh is BEST.

I have never ever heard of Spotted Dick in a can. Sounds gross.

Here is an easy recipe:

The British have got some weird named food. My other favourite is a main course called toad-in-the-hole. I have to wonder how they ever thought up these names.

I've never had anything to beat Sticky Toffee Pudding!

The BEST thing EVER anywhere in the entire universe.

Warm Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with extra warm toffee, cream AND homemade French vanilla icecream is the BEST thing EVER invented.

Bugger. Pity I can't eat it anymore. Still nice to reminisce about the good old days (i.e.) before UC

We tried some Sticky Toffee Puddings from Cartmel in Cumbria (very nice)... which is (alledgedly) where Madonna gets hers from... can't imagine she eats too many of them though

PS... Deep fried Mars Bars are still on my must-try list!

"Spotted Dick in a can" might be the funniest line I have ever read on this forum!!!

I've never had marmite, but I've had vegemite and ever after was opposed to trying anything ending in "mite." Yuk.

I have lived in the US all my life and have never seen whole roast chicken in a can! That sounds awful! I'll have to look more closely at the canned foods at the grocery store and see if I can find that (although I won't buy it!). And if I remember, I'll take a photo of the spotted dick in a can the next time I go grocery shopping. There's a teeny tiny "English foods" section at the grocery store I go to, I know they have "salad creme" (looks like mayonnaise to me) and the spotted dick in a can and a bunch of tea, I'll have to look more closely at that section and see what else they've got.

Oh, and I actually have had homemade sticky toffee pudding! Hubby got me a cooking program for my Nintendo DS and it has a lot of recipes from around the world and sticky toffee pudding was in there, so hubby and I made it (this was well before I became ill) and I remember it being pretty good. I couldn't eat it nowadays though, as I know for sure the recipe called for nuts and I can't do nuts anymore. :(

Agent you are back!!! Just where have you been??? We missed you! Hope you were ok.

Hi Pen
I won't divert the thread... I may post my adventures (???) separately. But basically I'm fine!

By the way... somebody posted a picture of a cheeseburger in a can a while ago. It really looked disgusting... anyone remember?

Trying to do a search on "cheeseburger" on this forum brings up a lot (so to speak). Now I'm wondering whether the cheeseburger in a can came up in this forum at all. Maybe I saw it in the banjo forum I used to frequent. It's definitely an American invention anyway.

EW. I've never seen a chicken in a can before!

Cat, Heinz Salad Cream is gorgeous! Especially with cheesy chips. (fries)

Here's a lovely pudding, a KitKat and a banana wrapped in foil baked in the oven or on a BBQ, absolutely delicious!

My goodness, I had no idea so many things came in cans nowadays! I've never seen a cheeseburger in a can either, maybe I'm not shopping at the right grocery store! Ha ha.

Joan, I can't do cheese nor fries, but I'm somewhat intrigued by the salad creme. I might pick up a bottle the next time I'm at the store. Do you put it on other things besides salad and fries? I actually can eat salad so that's a possibility. I'm intrigued by the banana & kit kat recipe too - do you smash them up first before baking or just wrap them up in the foil as-is?

I have friends from Aberdeen. She makes some of the best stuff I have ever tasted. I don't ask what it is though! She just tells me to try (whatever), a traditional Scottish dish. Need to ask, I guess!
Michele

It all sounds good to me. The picture made me hungry. LOL! I'm a typical northerner. I like fried bread, scones, and sour dough.

Cat, you spilt the banana thro the middle and just put the KitKat in, it melts into the banana, it's yummy.

And salad cream is lovely on salad, especially iceberg lettuce and cucumber, sweetcorn etc, if you can eat those things!
It's good with boiled eggs and tuna too. Much nicer than mayo.

Joan: Is salad creme sweet, like Miracle Whip? (Do you guys have Miracle Whip in the UK?) I personally can't stand Miracle Whip, it's too sweet and just tastes wrong, I can't describe it but it's really gross.

Salad cream is savoury... I think it was probably conceived as a cheap substitute for mayonaise. I suspect it was invented during times of austerity in the UK, in the 50s and 60s... so you could have it with your Sunday tea... just in case you weren't feeling miserable enough already (everything was in black and white in those days).

I have to agree with Joan, though... for some reason it does go very well with boiled eggs. I've never tried it with Tuna but might give it a try now!

ha ha ha what are we like?
from crumpets to salad cream!

Never heard of miracle whip, so I googled it. Never seen it over here.
Anyway, like Steve said, it's savoury not sweet, and it is so good, I smother my cheese in it.

i saw the title on here and thought bonus it must be something to do with nhs hospitals!
now im just really hungry, but loving the subject! i love crumpets but id just like to add dumplings to the list of stodge, now thats what im talkin about, this is also where suet comes into play, the fat holds the mixture together. and yeah i suppose salad cream is like the coleslaw dressing, close enough anyway! man, need to get me some crumpets quick time!

mmm crumpets,im just nipping out for a tic to buy some, they are the dogs biscuits lol as for muffins the are ace toasted and filled with scrambled egg, think even a wee slice of smoked salmon on top of the egg would be heaven...bon appetite

my pc crashed trying to suggest some Marmite between the butter and the cheese and you seem to have moved on in leaps and bounds since then :D

As far as desserts go I love Rhubarb crumble with custard and bread & butter pudding without :ytongue:

Let me know if you do come over, there will be a bed for you here if you want it

These posts have made me chuckle!

I love tuna sandwiches, the tuna being made with half mayo half salad cream or egg mayo but with salad cream, both delicious!

Im amazed to read the amount of stuff you don't have in America I thought there would be sections of the supermarket to buy these sorts of things!

Get some salad cream ordered - Heinz is the best!
