Gaining to much weight!

Since starting Remicade my dd as put on 8 lbs. :eek2:
My dd has NEVER been skinny!
I'm happy but concerned because nothings changed in her diet.
After introducing food I back her off calories from the formula.

I'm pray this is a good sign but wonder if anyone as has this issue?

Waiting to hear from the doc about this question also.:hug:
 
I also put on weight, and battle to keep it where it is right now and not gain any more - in fact I want to lose some.....

One thing I try to look at is calorie intake vs how much exercise etc I am getting....I think if I were to go back to my pre-child/remicade days and the amount of activity I did, I wouldn't have gained as much - I can see a difference when I increase my physical activity, but darn it, I'm having a hard time finding the TIME to do everything.....although.....winter is coming and we do get snow...so shovel get ready!
 
What about using an app like My Fitness Pal? To see how many she's eating and burning and then you can adjust formula accordingly? Maybe she won't even need formula!
We found seeing a nutritionist really helped (though M is trying to gain weight, not lose).
 
DS had that issue with remicade .
Once the intestine is healthy they really absorb calories quickly .
We still control formula to maintain a slower weight gain since he gained so much so fast while on pred/remicade/formula 2+ years ago (25 lbs) .
He currently drinks his formula (2 shakes )instead of breakfast daily .
This keeps his motility happy and he weight around the normal side.
We have lowered it to one but that was a disaster from a motility standpoint .


But from a calorie stand DS doesn't need formula anymore .
However he soon will be 11 so it should be as big of a deal anymore from growth spurts .
 
I realize S is so much older, his metabolism and lifestyle are likely very different, however, S does the same as MLP suggested... he replaces his breakfast with a shake and usually a snack as well. In S's situation, the shake probably ends up being a lower calorie (and healthier!) alternative for breakfast (ie instead of a take-out breakfast sandwich) and snack (ie pizza, etc.).
 
We have pretty much cut out the formula completely (since he really does not like them and it was just nagging to get him to drink) but definitely has gained more weight on remicade than any other
 
I've cut out her morning formula to see if that helps.

than your concerned because their gaining to much.

The doc called and said he's fine with her gaining that much but to keep a watch out for any edema.
 
I've noticed that A has gained weight since starting IVIG and Boost juice boxes. She finally looks strong and healthy! Amazing what the right medication can do!!

Does Grace exercise or participate in any sports?
 
Rheumatologist called and wants a thyroid check just to be sure.

:DSo I'm hoping this means theirs healing taken place and she just has a slow metabolism.

Found out yesterday that grace has eye pressure building up
in the left eye but no danger yet.
Just something to watch. :shifty:
We will have to keep at every 4 months for the eye doc.

Dancemom she's not in a sport...yet. I was thinking tennis next spring.
The school she attends is very academically challenging, so that takes most of the evening. ;)
 
I hope you're able to get her in something she enjoys and excels in. That's my soapbox....all kids need a hobby! lol For A it is dance. She's made such wonderful supportive friends there and the activity keeps her healthy. She's also learned many important life lessons there. For my youngest it is softball. A way she can shine on her own, do her own thing (she tried dance first). Hobbies can be good for the mind and body!

Even my gifted kiddo taking accelerated everything has to have one sport and one hobby

Highly recommend swimming - USA swimming should have clubs in your area most start at age 6 some younger - very flexible practice ( if they homework ) no pressure to attend practice or meets

Also counts as PT ;)
 
My grace hobby is art.
She loves painting, she loves cake decorating and mosaics.
But she needs more activity than that.
 
Any type of moving activity is great - our rheumatologist says no football, bungee jumping or wrestling, but everything else is fair game!

I think swimming is great, and I wish my daughters would've done it but they insisted on playing soccer (and M also played tennis). They loved being on a team more than anything and learned a lot from it. I wish they had chosen a less violent sport, but honestly, they never really got hurt more than the other girls.

Grace is at a great age to start a sport - they're pretty laid back at this point and it's more about fun than competing.
 
Yep, another big supporter of any sport. Helps keep them healthy, teaches them so many life skills, gives you a common goal (ie tournament, recital) to work/celebrate with your child and they make great friends. When S was diagnosed, he told his entire hockey team and immediately had the support of 16 friends. Growing up, S was mainly about hockey and my daughter horseback riding and soccer. I believe, from being fit and gaining confidence from their 'primary' sport, it allowed them to explore other sports and activities. S doesn't play competitively anymore but now plays intramural soccer, basketball and hockey. And my daughter has moved from riding and soccer to tae kwon do and fitness training. FW, what about horseback riding and jumping? It must be easily accessible where you live, she can practice/compete at her own pace and, even when not feeling well, it would be something she could do at a lighter pace. If I had to ask my daughter what her favourite sport is/was, I'm sure she'd still say riding. :)

She would love that :D but I didn't think it would help much physically.
I wanted both my kids to have riding lessons before they each get a horse.
 
Actually horse riding is M's least favorite sport - it REALLY hurt her lower back and even her hips. If Grace's back is better though, maybe she could do it?
