My son has asked me to ask the experts (that would be all of you) what is the best way to get rid of gas cramps. He often gets gas cramps in the evening just before bed. Any suggestions?

Hi Twiggy,
I use Ovol for Gas 180 mg softgels. They are really easy to swallow and work adequately. Oh shoot, I just looked at the dosage on the box and it says not to give to children under 12 years old. Darn! Maybe they make a children's version. I buy them in the pharmacy section of any store (Safeway, Real Canadian Superstore, WalMart, etc.)

Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe check with the doctor or pharmacist to see if they have a suggestion for a child.

He might try a few exercises.
-- Lie flat on your back and draw one knee toward you, wrapping the knee with your arms. Breathe normally and alternate with the other knee. In yoga, this is the wind releasing pose.
-- He might try the cobra pose as well.
-- Lie on your back and draw both knees to your chest but don't have the knees touch. Wrap the knees with either your hands or arms and rock side to side.

--get down on the floor on all fours and rock forward and back like a toddler.

--finally, walk-- even if it's a few loops around the living room

I've been doing these for years.

I have this problem often at night too. I feel for him!

Something that helps me is to sit in a rocking chair and rock for a while. Not sure why, but they had me do it in the hospital after my surgery and it really did help out.

Sorry to hear that, I know how painful that can be.
I can have a lot of gas at night sometimes, it's got so bad a few times that I was rolled up into a ball with pain.
Never have found much that really seems to help other then lying on the floor on my bad and a heating pad under me.

Like a previous member posted, I have found in addition to taking over the counter meds such as gas ex, that exercise is the best help. As a woman, I found sit ups works great for me. It actually pushes the gas up or out and gets the intestions moving :)

I agree with Sammies I use those positions when the pain gets bad especially the one with lifting both knees to chest and rocking really get things going. Hope your son gets some relief as it can be so uncomfortable x

Things that have worked with me, cayenne pepper, ginger, and peppermint. I would try making ginger/peppermint tea if anything. Infact I would try to make it almost everyday so hopefully it never leads to the painful gas cramps.

I walk and if I can't walk I lay on my back and pull my legs up to my chest. This forces the gas out. If I feel it early enough I take gas ex, too! I do find that if I drink anything with carbonation it kills me! Water, water, water!Hope he feels better!
