Hey All,I am in the process of getting gastric bypass hopefully in Nov.
However being newly diagnosed with Crohns I dont know if that will affect this.Does anyone know if you can have gastric bypass with crohns???I have quit smoking lost 20pds(could be from the crohns)stopped drinking pop have gone to the dr every month for weigh ins, have been waiting the 6months for the insurance to approve the surgery and then got diagnosed with crohns.I am going to be so bummed if i cant have the surgery!

Oh goodness. I wouldn't do that for all the money in the world. Not because the surgery itself is bad, but you have a serious intestinal disease and you're going to have elective surgery to cut around in there? Honestly, I'm really surprised a surgeon would agree to it under the circumstances. Does your surgeon know about the Crohn's? What does your GI think?

when they told me it was uc i did ask him if that would affect it and he said it would make my diarreha worse but did not say I couldnt or shouldnt have the surgery..I have to go back to gi on the 20th so I guess I will ask again now that it is crohns instead of uc.

EEK! I wouldn't do it with any kind of IBD. That's a real bummer on your plans, but with either Crohn's or UC, gastric bypass just sounds like you would be kicking a hornet's nest..... especially if you have Crohn's.

Surely there is some other alternative for you that doesn't involve surgery that will be safer in conjuction with IBD.

I had wanted gastric bypass as well and the surgeon would not go a head with the procedure....they did however, allow the gastric sleeve which is still a major restrictive surgery but does not re-route your system or create more opportunity for malnutrition and more vitamin deficiencies. I had this a year ago and have fared well.....I am still in remission....no longer on any meds. I still have my moments of inflammatory issues...D and C....arthritic pain that comes and goes....but it doesn't feel flare like as it does come and go. I work full time and for the most part my disease does not effect my day to day life like it did before I had my bowel resection.

It is very important to go to a surgeon that looks at your whole picture....the way the surgeon described bypass to me is that crohns disease likes to attack areas of anastomosis....the procedure would create several more sites for the crohns disease to attack. The sleeve procedure was a safer choice overall...

Hope this helps

Hello, I seen your post I wanted to ask you a few questions. I have having the gastic sleeve in about a month I wanted to see how your recovery is going?

Hello All,

I have had Crohn's for about 2 years and I am managing it well. I am going for the Gastric sleeve surgery in about a month. I wanted to get anyone's feedback on if they had it and how they did after it. I also get remicade so any and all information will be welcomed.

On a side note my friend had this surgery and 11 years after the fact she has now developed a serious side effect of dangerously low sugar levels every time she eats something. She was basically going into a coma and has now had her drivers licence removed as well they are contemplating removing part of her pancreas. And this is all attributed to the bypass method. Apparently these problems are quite common at this stage after the surgery.

Now I've heard that problem from the gastric bypass (xy reroute) I never heard that about the sleeve. Do you know what surgery she had?
