When over at my son's place for Thanksgiving, he and his girlfriend had some ginger pieces out for a treat. They said that when their stomach is irritated the ginger helps. I have been buying them myself. My wife had me look at the ingredients today. The second ingredient after ginger is sugar. I am wondering if sugar could be aggravating my system?

The sugar could certainly be feeding bacteria in your bowel and cause some discomfort. Large quantities of easily accessed sugar can do that.

I ate some cheese with candied ginger in it a while ago and it set off my proctitis bleeding, which I hadn't had for many months, sounds a bit similar.

I consume fresh ginger in a tea every day and have for years. It makes me feel good doesn't make me worse. Refined sugar definitely makes my symptoms come back though.

I know that Ginger works well for me. I don't have it in cookies much because I try to stay away from all the sugar. But, another thing that does well for my stomach has been Peppermint and Mint. I especially love them in teas. Celestial Seasonings has the Peppermint tea and Stash or Bigelow have the Mint. Both kinds are Caffeine Free.

Also, my favorite thing to get at Starbucks has been the tea latte. It's got mint tea, almond milk and sugar free vanilla syrup. Smells great and calms my stomach. If you order it, it's called :London Fog Tea Latte (custom order with the Mint Majesty tea and Almond Milk).

I personally can't have ginger, too spicy apparently. Same with fresh turmeric. I end up taking prednisolone, so ginger is off the menu ;-)
For sugar, it depends on whether or not I eat it alone or after a meal or along with plain yogurt. When I want to eat something sugary, I eat some yogurt afterwards. Probably the ph-value and bacteria help my gut getting along with a certain amount of sugar.
