Well I'm going to Spain this sat for a mates hen, even though I only got out of hospital Thursday just gone !!
And although I feel loads better I'm still worried ,
My husband said no but I've talked him into it , just panicking now about gettin insurance and taking meds over there any advice ??
Meds needed will b

Entocort
Trammadol
Codeine
Paracetamol
Vitamin b
Calcium

Has anyone ever had to take these meds or similar to Spain or get insurance for crohns after just coming out of hospital ??

Hi Enjoy the trip.

Best of luck with the insurance. This is not a replacement, but you should really have one if you're travelling within the EU.

As for the drugs, either get you GP to write a letter listing the medications or if they are on a repeat prescription, then take a copy of the repeat form with you. Make sure the drugs are in your hand baggage and all in their original packaging.

Have a great holiday!! Hope you have an amazing time and really let your hair down :) oh and have fun soaking up the rays!

Its not the E111 anymore but the EHIC. There isnt a charge for it (unlike the link above) and can be picked up here http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/Introduction.aspx

I would try and keep them in my hand luggage if possible, just in case your other luggage goes missing (unlikely but if it does at least you have your meds)

Enjoy yourself :)

Read this from the NACC website. Gives some great info about IBD on hioliday and also a list of insurance companies http://www.nacc.org.uk/downloads/factsheets/Travel_and_IBD.pdf

Depends on what your reason for hospitalization was for, how long... If it was for an obstruction, be very very careful! Aside from that, I have travelled to the Caribbean a couple times and found my Crohn's didn't really bother me. I had a fantastic time, and hope that you do too.

I lived in Barcelona for 2 months and took imuran (100mg). What's weird is that I had no signs of Crohn's whatsoever, I had no stomach ache and could eat everything during those 2 months. Even though there is no scientific basis that a warmer climate helps crohn's patients, I hear a lot of people with crohn's who feel better on vacations. I think the warmer climate in Spain really helped me. Or maybe it was the food, I don't know. We're going back in a few months.

hi jenny.im going in 7weeks but its a family holiday and was worried about the insurance.i phoned "direct travel insurance" its a company my mum swears by and for me and my family(5 in total) it cost us 30quid.i explained i had crohns and what meds i take and i was very happy with the price considering people on here have said they were quoted a few hundred for insurance, give them a call and see how you get on,

Thank u all .....

I was hospitalised for pain an d .
I've now just started steroids again budesonide ( entocort )
I know I'm still not 100 % but I really want to go , I know this may sound stupid to some but I'm 26 and never been anywhere including clubbing etc because I've always been ill an avoided it .
The main thing is that I can get good insurance and my doctors approval plus a letter , an then it's the d which ruins things for me so as long as my doc will give me extra pain killers an codeine to stop me going I'm sure I would b ok .
I'm so excited but nervous etc my mind is in a whirl !!! My Hubby put his foot down an said no at first but I've talked him round into letting me make my own mistakes as he has probably done and I've not had chance to .
Arrrghhhh crohns is a pain in the arse lol

jenny i hope you have fun.just keep an eye on what you eat and drink and play it safe, take plenty of imodium too just to keep the D at bay.

i'm in the same boat as you (and my name is also Jenn lol)... spain is on my list of travel destinations, i just got out of the hosp yesterday, but my trip isn't until june 22
i'm kind of concerned about the insurance thing too...

but i remind myself that i've done plenty of travel before and made out fine... just bring your meds and be extra careful... but yes, insurance would be great!

enjoy your trip!! :)

Don't worry too much about the diarrhea. I have actually found that in most cases if I am out doing something I really enjoy, the diarrhea strangely doesn't seem to be an issue. Frequency always seems to drop when I go fishing (from as frequently as once an hour or more to giving 7-8 hours without a movement), it settles down when I golf and it hasn't been an issue on two sun destination trips. Be prepared for it obviously, but don't dwell excessively. Others experiences may vary...
