Had EGD yesterday - update results

Well, I finally had my EGD yesterday. Not sure how anything went though, as the dr. "didn't need to talk to us" this time. ??? Last night I was up through the night with horrid stomach pains and diarrhea where afterwards I had to lay on the floor for a few minutes so the feeling of passing out would go away. I then practically crawled back to bed where I curled up and fell back to sleep only to wake up a short time later with the strangest dream. I dreamt that I was having a seizure!!!! I don't have seizures and I am well aware that people are not aware when they are having a seizure. I used to work as an EMT-IV Tech, so I understand how this type of thing goes. Anyway, in my dream I had 3 separate incidents where my head buzzed (I both felt it and heard it) and I was lying there seizing (in my dream) and throwing up and watching my hubby sleep! Like a person could sleep through something like that. When I finally awoke from that dream, I had a horrid headache. I slept rather fitfully the rest of the night.

This morning when I woke up I was a bit dizzy, still had a horrid headache, and was nauseous. As I was showering to go to work, I noticed that my body is really sore in a few places. It feels like I have a big bruise on one of my legs, but I don't see one. My neck is sore and my arms are sore. I feel like I've been through a war!!! I know the last time I had an EGD procedure done, I apparently wasn't drugged enough and they had to hold me down until the meds had more opportunity to work. I'm wondering if that happened again!!

Anyway, I'm not at work today. I feel awful. My head is just pounding. I didn't want to eat, but did so I could get my pills down. Could it be because I didn't take my prednisone yesterday? I know you're not supposed to just quit taking those, but I've only been on them a week and only missed yesterday due to the procedure.

Maybe I just have a flu bug? Have any of you had any of these issues after an EGD? Seems like such a simple procedure. I didn't have any problem after the colonoscopy or any other surgery. Must be a coincidence with a flu bug I'm thinking.

Pen,

Pred CAN be stopped totally if less than 3wks preferably 2wks on it as per the drug instructions to medical staff.

There is only a need to wean if longer on it, a higher dose or if the person is very sensitive to decreases due to inflammatory issues continuing.

The other reason it is weaned is because the adrenal glands are suppressed by the higher dose of steroid and therefore they need to register the decrease and kick in themselves.

On the aspect of cardiac arrest it is not something I have come across personally and your comments might be scaring the heck out of anyone reading them. If it did happen it would be "in extremis" i.e. an extreme event with massive impact due to the adrenals not kicking in as they should. A patient should never ever get into that situation and its not one I have or others I work with ever experienced so would certainly be interested to hear your further thoughts and research to back it up.

It also goes without saying that stopping or weaning at any point is done with agreement and supervision of those who commenced it to begin with.

Just thought I would post and provide a bit more info. Hope you dont mind..

Jenny,

Sounds like you were on the move during the scope and they held on to you hence all the aches and pains. Can be hard eating again after too cant it? You will get there honey. Wait and see what the results are. Its better he talks to you when you have no sedative in your system and you can ask questions then. ((hugs))

Thanks for the answers guys! Pen - I'm afraid in my headache induced haze I may have not written something correctly. I only didn't take the pred yesterday due to the EGD. I took it again this morning after I got something in my stomach. I didn't quit it - I'd never do that! I didn't take my antibiotic yesterday either due to the empty stomach. Sorry to have mislead you. I don't know what harm can be done by just quitting it without weaning off of it, nor do I care to find out!

Soup - Yeah, I'm figuring I was being less than cooperative while in the procedure room, especially since I know I was during the ERCP that I had 5 years ago.

If I can get rid of this monster headache, I think I'll be OK. I can handle the stomach pains/diarrhea while at work (it's no where near as bad as many of you have it), but the headache? No way.

Yeah Pen it is correct. Have been giving and receiving pred myself for years between work and being a patient so its one of the meds I know inside out lol

When on high doses of anything its not a good idea to just stop anyway. But thought I would justify my reasons to you so you know my reasoning etc and its not just a whim on my part..

Glad you are on the upturn Jen and hope the headache clears..

Well, the nurse called with my EGD results and my genetics results. Chronic inflammation in my stomach, but the small intestine is OK. Genetic tests are positive.:depressed: I see my GI on Dec. 3rd right away in the morning. He's out on vacation until then. I'm quite shocked actually. I thought they'd be negative............

Short post, but I posted in the Support Forum.
