hair falling out...

So my hair is really started thinning out the last few months. Im almost positive its from the humira. I would estimate close to half. Luckily i keep my head buzzed and have insanley thick hair. Most people would not be able to tell but im concerned if it gets worse.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is there any tyoe of vitamins or special shampoo i can use.

Also will it grow back if and when i stop my humira?

Thanks

I tried Biotin, 5000 mcg daily with great success. I still take it, even though the hair loss itself has stopped.
But, I also stopped the Aza, which I thought caused the problem. Not sure how and if it works when still on the med.

Good Luck! :)

Oh no really? I just started Humira 2 days ago and really don't want to lost more hair. I lost about a third on imuran/6MP(which I'm still on) and it finally stopped falling out and started growing back. Now I've got all this regrowth to deal with - I don't want it all happening again!

Never taken what you're on but I've had my fair share of pred hair loss! Use a shampoo and conditioner that strengthen and thicken hair, give yourself a ten minute scalp massage daily and make sure you're getting enough vitamins. I'd say it'd probably stop once your medication stops.
These tips won't stop the hair loss but will enhance what you have and make your hair grow quicker!! :)

Oh geez, now I'm freaked. I was never told by the doctor that hair loss could be a side effect when she went over things with me :-/ I have insanely thick hair, even when I was on Imuran (aza), and Prednisone. It may have been a little thinner when I was on the pred, but I think that may have been due to super malnutrition, as my weight had dropped from 160 to 98 pounds in a short period of time. I was literally starving to death. ... So now I'm a little freaked because I'm starting Humira soon and I don't want to lose my hair. My fiance is in the Military and he's coming home in April after being gone for several months. I don't want him to come hold to a bald women, lol.

You won't be bald.. :) i still have thick hair but it just isn't as thick as before. ( It's worse when it's long cause it seems like soooo much is coming out)

Over the last two years, I've lost about half my hair. Thank goodness I had pretty thick hair to start or I'd be bald by now. At least you're a guy and can do the whole "shaved head", haha. That's a little harder to pull off for us gals.

I found that using the Loreal total repair 5 care line has helped a bit with my hair loss. especially the night elixier. (http://www.lorealparis.ca/haircare/hair-expertise/total-repair/night-elixir.aspx) It repairs damaged hair and such. And, healthy hair is less prone to falling out! :p

As for vits, try some Omega-3. It's supposed to make hair all shiny and what not...haha. And also try and eat a balanced meal, malnutrition can cause major hair loss as well.

Yep, just plain old fish oil, and my hair grows like no tomorrow. I use Wen haircare now - love it. It feels kind of goofy to not have bubbles and lather, but my hair is soft and shiny. I lost most of my hair when I was really sick, and had to cut it off because it got so tangled in the hospital.

I've been dealing with the exact same thing. :frown:

Here's my medicinal history....

I started taking Pentasa, Humira and Azathioprine together in July. I also was in the process of tapering off Prednisone until about September.

My doctor allowed me to go off of Pentasa in October, at which point, I've continued on Azathioprine and Humira. Around November, my brother commented that he thought my hair was really thinning. I have always had incredibly thick hair and hadn't noticed until he told me. Sure enough, I was really thinning out. I told my doctor in December about my hair loss and he said it could be a delayed reaction to my hospitalization (caused by a flare) in June. Well, it's been 2 months since I've seen my doctor and the hair has thinned more, so I don't think it's a delayed reaction to the hospitalization. I should add that in early December I also started Rogaine, Propecia and Nioxin and I started taking Biotin in January.

My December blood work revealed that I had incredibly low Vitamin D levels but I'm not sure I had a full metabolic panel run at the time to indicate whether I was low in any other vitamins.

I'm starting to really get worried as the front of my scalp is visibly balding and this has all started directly from the time I started medicating for Crohn's Disease. I know I'm a guy and some people think it's easier for us to bald, but I am really struggling with this and don't want to lose my hair.

My wife just bought me some folic acid supplements today and I'll try taking Folic Acid alongside Biotin now. My doctor said that because my symptoms have completely disappeared and I seemed to be doing well, he'd recommend letting me go off of azathioprine or humira soon. From reading all of these blogs, it's hard to tell from people if Aza or Humira is the real cause of all of this hair loss. I'm tempted to go off of Humira and stick to Aza because Humira is generally more of a pain to deal with, but I'm not sure if it's the root of my hair loss. Any suggestions/comments/ideas?

Thanks for all of your support.

My wife had that with Cimzia. She takes "Be beautiful Hair Skin & Nails" and it resolved the issue completely. Active ingredient is mostly biotin and it seems to work for her.
Good luck.

I don't think Biotin actually made any difference for me. My hairdresser confirmed that it just helps to make hair stronger and healthier, not to actually stop it falling out. But I think I was on Aza/6MP for about 8 months, and then the hair loss slowed and stopped altogether (apart from what I'd normally use). At this point I had probably lost a third of my hair (it was really thick to start with). I now have a whole heap of regrowth which is a pain to deal with (I have long hair so it's all frizzy around my face) but at least it's not falling out any more.

My advice would be to give it another month or two and see if it slows/stops. I've only just started on Humira though, so I have no comment if that could be causing it...

At the end of the day, if it's making you stress out, that won't be good for your crohn's.

There are millions of Americans who have issues with hair loss. The fact is that it is normal to lose a certain amount of hair each day. However, when your hair loss becomes more frequent and in larger amounts, then there may be an underlying issue that needs treatment.
