Hello,
I am a 50-year-old female, previously quite healthy, who was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis this past July. Long summer started off with C. difficile infection, diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, and subsequent hospital admission with toxic megacolon. Fortunately, I left the hospital with my colon still intact this time but quite sick and I am very aware that this may only be temporary. Over the period of time of 3 months, I lost 40 lbs and was extremely dehydrated on multiple occasions. I became malnourished and very debilitated. I have just had a follow-up colonoscopy and am now felt to have Crohn's because of how my small intestine looks. With all of this, and this will sound quite vain, the hardest thing I am experiencing now is hair loss. Not a little bit but I am starting to look like I have male pattern baldness. Has anyone experienced this? I am going to see a dermatologist next week but wanted some input from people in similar circumstances. I have been told it could be due to the Crohn's/ulcerative colitis itself or to medication. They said it could also be due to the extreme weight loss and malnutrition even though it started months after my hospitalization. I am currently receiving Remicade infusions. I am also on Lialda. My doctor wanted me to come off Lialda as he thought this might be doing it but I was only able to go off for 5 days before symptoms started to get worse. I understand that there are more important things to worry about and I am oh so grateful for the excellent care I received and am receiving but wonder if this is temporary or something I will just have to live with. Thank you for "listening" and any feedback would be much appreciated. Again, I am sorry if this sounds petty or vain, but this hair loss, amongst every thing else, has me pretty down. When I told this to my GI doctor, he said, and I quote, "Sometimes, all we have is our vanity." He also has Crohn's and is quite understanding. Thanks again.

My first thought while reading your story was malnutrition as the culprit. Age can factor into that too. I didn't have any hair loss with Remicade or Lialda, but did have a lot of skin issues with malnutrition and dehydration.

Just a few days ago, a couple of other people were discussing hair loss in connection with Crohn's and possibly related to azathioprine. I bet one of them will see this post and be able to offer more insight.

Welcome to the forum!!!!

I was diagnosed this past October with UC and had a bad reaction to Apriso so I did the prednisone taper and am on no meds and feeling okay but am losing a lot of hair too. I told my GI about it and he says it is from the Apriso and should correct itself overtime. I haven't had Apriso since November. I hope the hair loss stops soon! I am worried as well. I'm 34 and eat a vegetarian diet and take vitamins and a probiotic. Let me know what your dermatologist says.

I have been on Apriso for a little over a year and my hair has thinned incredibly. I have lost at least 50% of my hair, probably more. The Apriso helps my UC, so I need to be on it. It is all mesalamine based medications that can cause hair loss, not just Apriso or Lialda. I have started considering getting a wig if my hair gets much thinner. Hang in there. I am happy to hear that the medicine is working for you. :)

Hi welcome! I'm a hair stylist and a crohnie:) there is this product you can get on amazon called Viviscal its a vitamin you take in the morning and at night and a shampoo and conditioner. I have 5 clients on it now and all have had really good results. One has been on it for a year now and her hair is 10 times better then when she started. I'm big on healthy living, so when I heard about this on Dr. oz it got my attention. Did my research and I cant find anything wrong with it. I hope this helps good luck!

I am having major issues with hair loss as well right now. Thanks for this info. My question to you as a stylist (and no I will not hold you responsible for the outcome, lol!) is if coloring my hair would be a bad idea when I'm going through this. I would SO love to get my color touched up this week to give me a "pick me up" and feel refreshed - even though I'm a prednisone blimp, lol - but worried coloring may do too much damage and loose more hair! Do you have an opinion on this? Thanks

I lost a ton of hair last fall, to the point that I cut my long long hair to just under my ears so that we were cleaning shorter hairs off everything in the house. I was losing handfuls. I hadn't been diagnosed yet, I was just being treated for Celiacs at that point, so no medication either. My doc just said it was a mal-absorbtion issue. Eventually it stopped and hair started to re-grow.

Ok I'm no Dr. but if you could try a color with less peroxide maybe a Demi permanent color. Some brands have less then others. I wouldn't blame you at all if you just did your normal color because I know how it feels to be all big and bloated on that crap med and just want to feel like your self again. I really don't know if coloring would hurt your hair anymore then normal coloring does. I myself would try something less harsh just because I wouldn't want to risk it. You can always ask your stylist to do a patch test a few days before your appointment and see how it goes. I hope this helps keep me updated. Good luck!:)

It's the remicade, I never had a problem with hair loss until I started taking it! Came out by the handful, and yes it is one of the hardest things to get thru. I had to stop due to a build up of antibodies. Of course I can't say 100% it's the remicade, but never had that issue until I took it!

I thought my hair loss was caused by Prednisone. It made my hair brittle, and half of it broke off, so I had it cut short. My fingernails also got grooves in them, maybe a nutritional deficiency. After I finished with the Prednisone, and got on vitamins, my hair grew back thicker than it has ever been, and my nails are back to normal.

Hi, and welcome to the froum. I had alot of hair loss due to malnutrition

It got better with time. I'm 62, so some hair loss is normal, but not very much in my family.

Being a gut i don't freak about it much, my wife just gave me a hair cut today and she said its about the same as it was before crohns years ago. now she must be hitt'n on me I say...lol

I hope you find the support I have at this forum. The chat room is a great place for support.

Jim
