One week in and I think im having heart burn. Usual side effect of prednisone? Any suggestions to help it?

Its driving me nuts and I dont want this to keep me awake :(

Hi Sherry,

One thing that I found worked for heartburn is mixing a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with water and taking it 1-2 times a day, it does help a fair bit, the only downside is it is a temporary fix as you have to keep doing it.

Take a read and let me know how you go

I developed chronic heartburn when I got Crohn's. I've been on omeprazole/prilosec for 9 years. I even have to take it while in remission.

It's more likely related to your Crohn's than the pred. I get it occasionally but so far it's not anything to do with the Crohn's - more related to drinking coffee before I eat peanut butter or something like that.

Hi Sherry,

Are you taking the prednisone and then laying down to go to sleep? If so, yes, it is very likely the prednisone. Don't lay down for at least an hour after taking it and see if that helps.

Hmm I have been eating peanut butter on my bananna.

Not taking it then laying down. I take it about 3-4 hrs before bedtime.

My mother had mentioned eating peppermint for it.

I do go get my blood tests done on tuesday, I will remind them that I am still having it.

I have never had an issue with it before this so I just assumed it was medicine related.

You guys are so helpful, thank u. I just really hate not knowing what to do.

I usually use some Gaviscon at night if it bothers me, prop yourself up a bit to sleep so acid doesn't go up your esophagus. Be careful about taking antacids, as they can interfere with other meds if taken to close together.

I heard slippery elm is helpful for heartburn. I am going to try it because I don't want to take Prilosec again. The GERD also makes me feel like my chest is tight and throat closing.

Zantac is over the counter, but I'd try eating something else first. I've used peppermint to calm my tummy if something nauseates me (usually the fish oil).

Hi Sherry,

I have been having really bad heartburn since week 2 on Entocort. (I had some acid reflux prior to diagnosis, but since this flare it has got worse. My GI told me to take lanzaprasol twice a day with gaviscon in between if needed.
