hello from Oz...newly diagnosed

Hi Guys,

My name is Amy and from NSW in Australia. I was diagnosed with crohn's disease in August this year and was going ok with it all until i experienced my first flare up last week, which put me in hospital for five days.

I was first put on pyralin, but had bad side effects from that so my GP put me on mesasal. I was on 1 tablet three times a day and then i started flaring up last week, to the point where i was admitted to hospital after chronic diarohhea and bleeding after a week. I went into hospital on saturday where they started me on prednisone through iv. I was released from hospital on wednesday and have started taking the oral prednisone which im on 50mg a day and have to wheen off them at 5mg a week. I'm now also taking 16 mesasal tablets a day until I go back to my gastreologist. Im now on a low fibre diet for the next 5-6 weeks

Am finding it all a bit overwhelming at the moment, but my friends and family have been very supportive. and work is also very good about it.

Is there anyone else from Oz on here and also what are my chances of expeirncing these flares again. i guess everyone is different. Should I be looking at seeing a natropath..

thanks for listening guys, so glad i found this forum

Hello,
There a few Aussies here. There is a lot of good info here so look around at some of the different threads. I hope you start to feel better soon.

Welcome, I am not an Aussie but close enough as I am in new Zealand - we are neighbours!

There are a coople of people from Oz on here, one of them is Nicci (seaofdreams) a recent diagnosee as well.

I hope you get the flare under control!

Welcome Amy, sorry you have not been well, The steroids should help pretty quick. Hope you feel better soon. Peggy

Hi Amy, and welcome!

I'm originally from Australia but living in Canada at the moment.

I hope you're soon feeling well :)

Welcome Amy! I'm from Australia and I was diagnosed in August as well.
Unfortunately with regards to your questions, we can't really answer them because everyone experiences IBD so differently.

I think that natural medicine has it's place in health care but I also believe that with diseases like Crohn's, you need to find a good balance between natural alternatives and modern medicine.

Before I was diagnosed, I saw a naturopath and she "diagnosed" me with gall stones and charged me $300 for herbs and supplements and told me that I shouldn't see a doctor because what she gave me would cure me.
Now, my boyfriends mum is a nutrition specialist with a background in natural medicine and she has given me some supplements to have a try of, which you'll see listed in my sig.
You'll probably come across loads of different natural supplements and such along the way like many of us do and want to give them a go yourself. Different combinations of things work differently for lots of people. It's all very personal.

As for the possibility of more flare ups, I don't want to give advice on something so uncertain. Unfortunately Crohn's isn't currently "curable" so it may be something you'll have to deal with for the rest of your life.

I hope you'll find this forum and all of the members as helpful as I do ^_^

Welcome to the forum Amy, sorry to hear you have not been well. I have found this site great and it has really helped.

Theresa

Hey Amy (and sesofdreams)

It is nice to see another Aussie girl on the site. Would be good to stay in touch as we were diagnosed very close together and close in age so it will be interesting and educational for me. How were you before this last flare up? Was it a shock to you or had you been pretty ill in the past before your diagnosis?

ALso how are you feeling now, hope all is a little better.
