Hi I’m Ana and I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis this November and right now I think I’m ok.. Despite the fact that I can’t eat anything… grrr

This all start in June but I didn’t want to see a doctor because I had my vacations already planned. so I did a little research (internet and pathology books) and I thought to myself “colitis….. well then.. there’s nothing to worry about in October (after my vacations) I’ll go to my physician”. The thing is I was just bleeding and losing weight..but when I was, all alone, enjoying the beautiful sun and the spicy yummy food of s. tome (in Africa) I start having horrible abdominal pain and severe diarrhea…since there was nothing to do about it I kept on eating my spicy yummy food and having fun.

When I came back (I’m from Portugal by the way..) I went to the hospital and the doctors said that since I didn’t have anemia they couldn’t do anything so I went to see my physician and then colonoscopy time....

The day of the colonoscopy I went to the hospital again and no one knew what to do with me, so I think I saw 4 doctors..they said that I had pancolitis and gave me prescriptions.. so far so “good” I already knew that.. but then they drop the bomb.. “you can’t eat vegetables, fruit, eat cheese blablablabla” and that was the hard part.. I’m a vegetarian and just the smell of meat or fish (specially this one) makes me sick…(I miss my food!!…)
So.. tomorrow I’m gonna do another colonoscopy and take some more blood to see if the treatment is working (I’m just taking mesalazine).. and I’m gonna “””””kill””””” the doctor if he doesn’t let me eat my food!! Lol..

 this is my UC story and im coping just fine...

Hey there welcome to the forums. Im not extremely familar with UC but my aunt does have it and she eats many things just fine. It is often harder to eat fruits and veggies but not impossible. Usually the reason they are hard to eat is because high fiber is hard to digest (including healthy people) so it can cause problems and pain for us. Try steaming your vegetables or peeling your fruit to make it easier. Also skins arent digestable so try to stay away from them and seeds whenever possible. Best of luck and remember everybody is different with what they can and cant eat, no doctor can predict that because its always different.

Hi!

Try to stick with lower fiber fruits and veggies I know potatoes, Banannas and well cooked peas don't bother me to much when I am not in a huge flare. In a flare I switch to pastas mashed potatoes generally really mushy food.

Try to get something into your system because if you don't you wont have what you need to heal.

Welcome to the forums

hey! thank you!

i can eat everyting right now because i had, last week, another colonoscopy and my gi found nothing.. not even a scar!! so he let me eat all i want (but i still need my meds)..but im still afraid to try "new" food to be true.. lool

thank you again! :)

Hey don't worry about being a veggi with pancolitis, you'll do just fine.

Yes some foods will not be digested properly, if at all, but this I doubt will happen all the time. If anything people with UC should'nt have so many dietry issues as those with crohns, but this is of course a generalisation.

I have pancolitis and have been a veggie for over 25 years, it can be done, just don't expect everything to be normal all the time and you won't be dissapointed.

I have never been given any dietry advice, its just a case of finding out what works for you, and you will.

take care

G

Try going to a natural market to find alternatives. You know I find a lot of new food at Trader Joes if you have one nearby. They also have a catalog as well. They clearly label their items with what is contained in them. If you are fortunate to live near a wegmans (I work there) they have keys to help you find it. I had to give up my favorites too but I learned to enjoy new foods as much. Its just tough when friends order my favorites at dinner and I'm dying to eat them.

:) ive been eating all my veggies and i feel great! and a lot of fruit too: khaki fruit, banana, pear, blueberry, tamarind,.... (i was missing a lot ok?! )

i already go to a natural market, because here its very difficult to find "alternative" food in a regular one.. but the ppl there dont know much about it...lolol

mediterranean diet its considerate one of the best.. maybe ill try some (without the meat and the fish lool)

thank you all! Ana
