hey...

i am never sure when to be concerned about bleeding...

i sometimes have blood during bowel movements, with no diarrhea... but sometimes it's A LOT of bright red blood... like all the toilet water will be full of blood...

i've mentioned it to my doctor, unsure if it's hemmoroids or not, she says if i feel a bit of pain in the rectum area while the bleeding occurs, then that's a good thing cuz it means it's likely coming from the lower end i think...

i've sometimes seen a little bright red blood in my actual stool... as i did earlier this evening...

but just now, i went pee, and as i wiped front to back, there was quite a bit of blood on the toilet paper (from my butt)!

i don't have a cut in my rectum or whatever, i don't have pain there, i don't notice swelling...

so i'm wondering if it means the bleeding could be coming from my intestines????

anyone experience this kind of bleeding?

If it is coming from high in the intestines then the blood will be a dark red and the lower it is in the intestines the more red the blood. I can't diagnose what you have but the only experience I have with bright red blood is from low in the intestines, more like the rectum or outer skin. I hope you find what it is that is causing you this bleeding.

I'm not an expert either, but I believe what Jeff says..when I see bleeding during a flareup it is dark (almost black)...the times I have seen bright coloured blood was when I've had a bad bladder/kidney infection (light enough that it almost looks pink). Did you eat anything that is red? Because I know that leaves a trace of red, too.

I've had a lot of bleeding in the past. Currently it's only occasional and related to fissures... painful at the time, but usually a one-off.
But I've also had the "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" type BMs... quite red blood probably from somewhere in the lower bowels, plus mucous... plus everything else, for up to two weeks. You really need to see the doc after a few days of this. I ended up with some stuff called "Colifoam" which is a steroid foam that's applied straight up your rectum for a week... not nice, but it works. We've had other threads on this, and others have not had such positive results from this type of treatment, but it was fine for me.
I'll also point out that I've not had this problem since I've been on Imuran for the past two years

before my fistulas got bad the internal ones were bleeding (this was before I got too sore to sit down.) however it could be coming your intestines if you are quite ulcerated up in there...I would contact your GI.

I have had a few experiences with this where it looks like someone killed the kool-aid man in the toiled and it can be quite scary, my advice is to get to the doctor when you notice this just to make sure everything is ok and that its nothing serious.

I believe what Jeff says is correct also. I experience bleeding regularly but it's always a darker red, mixed in with the BM and there is no blood there when I wipe. Which my gastro said meant it's coming from higher up as opposed to hemmoroids, which would produce quite a lot of bright red blood, evident on toilet paper etc as you describe.

Really though if it's getting worrying go back to your doctor, it's what they're there for! Better to be safe than sorry in my opinion.

thanks for the replies everyone... yeah i have mentioned it to my doctor a couple of times and she seems to think it's likely hemorrhoids... but i guess i just get freaked out because of the amount of blood... i have also heard about the darker blood vs the brighter red blood thing... i'm just gonna wait until i see my GI and make sure to mention it to him as well.

Hi Cheeky,

Yes please make sure you tell your gastro doctor about this
as too much blood loss can result in anemia.

Take care. :)
