My daughter has been on Mercaptopurine for almost 2 months and her symptoms are still bad. Has anyone had any luck with this drug?

Hey Mom,

Many members here have had varying success with 6mp. My children are on Azathioprine, a similar drug, and have had great success with it but that is following surgery.

Did your daughter have a TPMT test before commencing it? It is a test to see if you have an enzyme in your liver that allows you to metabolise the drug effectively.

It can take at least 3 months to become fully therapeutic with this drug and it is also a weight based dosage drug. What dose is your daughter taking? Dose is normally calculated at 1.5 - 2.5mg per kilo.

Was she on steroids or any other treatment to bring inflammation under control when she commenced it?

It can take anywhere from 6 - 12 weeks to see any improvement from Mercaptopurine. She should be getting regular lab work to monitor her white blood count. If she has symptoms, they should have put her on some other "fast acting" med to help her in the meantime. Is she seeing a gastroenterologist?

Hi mom, it took about 4 months for full efficacy when my son was on it. I too would like to know if he had steroid taper prior to starting 6mp. We did, so my son's symptoms were very mild while waiting for the 6mp.

Mercap failed to achieve complete remission in our case so we moved on but we didn't have any problems with it. It's worth a try! Good luck mom!!

My 8 year old son has been on 6mp for a year exactly and seems to be doing the job. I hope it works for your little one too. good luck. xx

Took us a liitle over 4 months for 6MP to do it's job. But then we had total remission for over a year.

We have a friend who has remained in remission on nothing but 6MP for 6 years and going strong.

I hope it works that well for your child!!

Hugs,

J

I have been on 6mp for the greater part of the year and it hasn't helped me enough. It has helped to drop my severety of my disease, I used to be severe but now it's down to a solid moderate. I'm currently waiting to start remicaid.

6mp is one of those drugs that needs to build up in your system to get the full benifits which is why many people don;t feel the immediate affects. After it builds up you should start to see a difference

I started it about 3 weeks ago. Coming off my first moderate to servere flare. I have been told that it takes a few months. My only concern is that I've started to taper my steriod and I'm getting worse. I see my doc today and need to figure out how to get me through the next few months to see if it's working.
