My 3 yr old had an upper GI today. She has had throat and gut issues for a while, hoarseness, food refusal, regressing to baby food, stomach pains, constipation.
She also has gluten intolerance, so she did a gluten challenge to check for celiac disease.
Her dad has crohns so it is a possibility that h h crossed our minds.
The diagnosis they are working through
Tonsilitis- slightly swollen but never has fever ruled out
Eosinophilic eosophagitis - scope looked clean, but have to wait for biopsies

But the surgeon said they found a red section that was either a hematoma or blood clot. Has anyone had this as an indication of IBD? Our concerns are half heartedly being listened to as "statistically" she doesn't fit the profile of a person at risk of crohns.

We haven’t had that Laura.

Is the statistic age and no blood and/or diarrhoea? If so you will find that you are not alone here with having a young child with IBD and without the two symptoms that are immediately looked to as a sign of IBD.

We were told as she is female, young, and half chinese she could never in a million years have IBD or celiac disease it's statistically impossible. Should have seen the docs face when her chinese dad informed him that he had crohns

I would think with her father having crohn's she already fits the profile. I think sometimes the doctors are too quick to write something off because it doesn't fit into the majority. My son's doctors went straight to crohn's when he started having problems because his father has crohn's and his pediatrician knew that from the family health history. although his disease since then has not followed any "normal" crohn's but after having been a part of this community I've really come to realize is the statistics should be thrown out or at least in the pediatric community as most of these kids don't fit in the "standard" box

It's frustrating our eldest has the exact same rash her dad had and he was told it was crohns related mentioned to gastro our concerns, he sent us to the kids hospital to be scoped to rule in or out crohns and celiac. The surgeon took one look at her notes and said no scope give her zantac! No follow up or anything. Thankfully with our 3 yr old we have other specialties following her too, and they raised concerns not us. And now our 4 month old has started showing issues with her bowels at the same age they did!

Now off to see their daddy who had his second TI resection. Never seen a grown man so happy about pooping!! And he now understands why I was adamant no epidural when I had the kids!
