This probably belongs in the UC section but I did not find a nutrition thread in that subheading so I'll put it here:

I've been drinking aloe vera juice or fresh gel from the plant when I can get it. It seems to help curb diarrhea (gel seems to work better) and there is some science behind it:

1: Langmead L, Rampton DS. Review article: complementary and alternative
therapies for inflammatory bowel disease. Aliment Pharmacol Ther. 2006 Feb
1;23(3):341-9. Review. PubMed PMID: 16422993.

"A randomized, double-blind, controlled study showed that aloe vera gel, given for 4 weeks to patients with moderately active UC, produced a clinical response in significantly more patients than did placebo. Clinical remission, improvement and response occurred in nine (30%), 11 (37%) and 14 (47%), respectively, of 30 patients given Aloe vera, compared with one (7%), one(7%) two (14%; P < 0.05), respectively, of 14 patients taking placebo (using a 2:1 A. veralacebo randomization schedule). The Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index and histological scores decreased significantly during treatment with A. vera but not with placebo.23"

Other things I'm doing: plants with 'resistant starch' (green beans are in this class). The starch is broken down by gut bacteria to produce short chain fatty acids (eg. butyric acid), the main food source used by colonic epithelial cells. So the theory is that it gives your damaged cells an energy boost.

1: Assisi RF; GISDI Study Group. Combined butyric acid/mesalazine treatment in ulcerative colitis with mild-moderate activity. Results of a multicentre pilot study. Minerva Gastroenterol Dietol. 2008 Sep;54(3):231-8. PubMed PMID: 18614971.

(I also avoid all processed foods, including meats like turkey that are soaked in 'all natural flavoring'. I also avoid lactose, fermented products, and excess sugar.)

Treatments for UC (diagnosed 1996):
Rowasa 4g/day
Lialda 4 tabs/day
vitamin D 40,000 units/week
Vitamin C 1g/day (after meals)
green beans 1/2 lb/day
aloe vera: daily for 2 weeks during flares or when stress is anticipated

Results:
Always a little bleeding but only 1-2 BM/day most of the time.
energy: see 100Reps profile at www.bodybuilding.com

Thanks I C Red.
I find your post of great interest.
12 months ago i decided to try looking for natural help for Crohn's again.
I'd tried various things over the years - SCD,Primal Defense,Slippery Elm to name a few but i never found success with them.
For 12 months now i've been taking AMP (an extract of Aloe).
I read everything i could find on the web about it.
I found on forums some said it was great whilst others said it wasn't any good.
I've had my best 12 months since being diagnosed many years ago.

I hope you stay well
