Hi all,

I don't have children and haven't made a decision about whether i will want them one day. I have generally been put off as I wouldn't think it fair if i was to pass on a duff gene.

My mother has crohn's but was diagnosed after giving birth.

I just wanted two questions answered really...

- Do your parents have crohn's?
- Do you children have crohn's (if you have any)

Answers will be appreciated :)

My dad had Crohn's. My children do not have Crohn's. One is in college and 1 in middle school. None of my four brothers have Crohn's either.

Grandmother was diagnosed late in life with it..... She was a great women so I inherited some great genes and some not so great ones- that's the way it goes. So far my three kids show no signs of having problems and I pray a lot that this skips them and there children.

No one in my family has crohns or any bowel problems, just me .... I've always been the unlucky one! Lol!

My parents don't have Crohn's (or UC). I posted some good stats that may help you here:

http://evidencebasedibd.blogspot.com/2012/12/ibd-and-genetics.html

Bottom line from the post:

- IBD has a definite genetic component (but it is not believed to be exclusively genetic).
- Siblings of those with IBD have a 10 – 20% chance of developing the disease.
- Children of parents with IBD have a 3 – 10% chance of developing the disease. If both parents have IBD, the risk rises to 30-50%.

Nobody in my family has any bowel issues. This includes all known distant relatives, parents, brothers, or my two kids.

Go figure.

My great-grandfather (my father's mother's father) had UC. No other known cases of IBD in my family. I don't have children for many reasons besides IBD - I don't really like kids, I don't know if I'd have the energy or the patience for kids, the thought of going through a pregnancy does not appeal to me in the least, etc. And there's other genetic stuff to consider too besides just IBD - there's stuff in my family like depression and OCD that a lot more family members have (including me), that I likely would pass on. In a nutshell, I just don't really feel the need to create a new human who is going to exhaust me and my finances, and will probably just grow up to resent and ignore me the way I do with my parents. That's just me though!

My mother, uncle, first cousin had crohns disease, my 26 year old son does not have it nor did my two brothers.

I am the only one in my blood family that has crohns, I do have a step cousin who also has it, but all my other cousins don't, this includes 3 siblings and 4 nephews and nieces. I don't have any children yet but I hope that this gene will skip them .

Hi There,

There is no one in my family with it neither. But I do believe heriditary does play a significant role in it and how bad it will become.
I know a family here in the city where I live and the father has it and 4 of the 5 children as well. My doctor said that it is very heriditary but it also sometimes falls out of that once in a while.

Wish I had more answers.

None of my parents had or have Crohn's and none of my siblings do. I have a 23 year old son and he has not shown any signs.

Both parents had digestive issues but none got tested for Crohn's. I am the only one of 4 siblings with Crohn's diagnosis. So far none of my 3 children have it. I was diagnosed later in life (54) so who knows if or when my children could develop it.

Mom had lupus (auto-immune disease). Dad had bowel cancer. Both sisters have auto immune diseases - multiple sclerosis & lupus. All of my sisters kids are getting checked for auto immune diseases ahead of time.
