Hey all.

As you may have already guessed by seeing my Forum name, my name is Dan (or Daniel). I am currently 21 years of age and studying at college.

I have recently been browsing through the web looking for ways to gain weight. I've found it very hard to gain any at all since being diagnosed with Crohns Disease sometime in 2007. While browsing though I stumbled upon this Forum. It looks quite active and it is about time I talked about and learned more about the illness I have as I generally keep it to myself.

Through my life I had been struggling with my bowels, since probably the age of around 12, but the doctor I was seeing always put it down to IBS. During this five year period, from 12 to 17, I was basically suffering most days. I missed out on a lot of my education and got very average qualifications in my GSCE's when I know I am capable of much better.

Having not been satisfied with my previous doctor I started to see a new one, he took me through other routes of what the problem could be. At 17 years old a mass formed on the right side of my colon and I was sent straight to hospital after having an emergency appointment with my GP. An operation was carried out to remove this mass and this is when I was told I had Crohns Disease. I was in hospital for around 14 days recovering from the operation then I was back at home.

My first wave of medication was a steroid treatment which had no success, I can't remember the actual name of this tablet but I think it started with a P lol. I am now currently taking Azathioprine (Imuran) along with some vitamin and mineral tablets. I have been taking these for around 2 and a half years now. I hadn't had any side effects from them until very recently. I am now borderline osteoporosis (hope I spelt that right) and have a constant struggle with my joints, mainly my lower back, all the time. Life isn't really getting easier for me at the moment but I will soldier on as others do I am sure :).

I hope to learn a lot from reading through this Forum and hope to become an active member in the community.

Thanks all for reading
Dan

Hey Dan, welcome. The steriod you were on was/is called Prednisone. It's pretty much the standard drug to treat inflammation due to Crohns. Imuran is an immunosuppression drug which can suppress your bone-marrow. Plus Crohn's in general can cause fragile bone and teeth due to malnutrition. Good times, right?
As long as you try to find a silver lining and/or learning a life lesson out of everything you go through and experience dealing with Crohn's it can truely help you grow as a person and help you manage your health.

Hi Dan and welcome. Yes, many of us were told we had IBS before getting diagnosed with IBD later. I think IBS is the easy answer for doctors...

As you're on Imuran, in case you haven't checked it out, be sure to have a look at our Imuran forum.

See you around :)
