Hi, I'm Noah

I've had Crohns for 17yrs.. I've been in a flare up for about a 9 months now and just went on new meds a month ago(balsalazide and budesonide) and (hyoscyamine) for the cramping an pain. The two meds I'm taking for the Crohns don't seem to be working.. The cramping/pain can be bad some days, were I can't even get up! 6yrs ago I was taking Humira and went into remission and befor that I was taking Remicade. Both the Remicade and Humira worked.. I went off the Humira when I went in remission for about 3yrs.. Then out of the blue I started getting sick again. All the Crohns symptoms came back and so fast.. cramping, diarrhea, fever, weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, ect...

I have a colonoscopy next week and I'm a bit worried. I have Crohns in the ilium and that's we're I have the most pain, swelling, and cramping.

Does anyone have any tips or helps on foods to eat in the mean time. And what I should do about the weight loss and fatigue?

Thanks
Noah

Hello Noah and welcome to the forum, I am sorry that the tum is acting up again :(

I would let the docs know when you seem the next week that the meds do not appear to be helping. Diet wise if you are not finding any relief from being on a low residue diet like mash and soups then perhaps enquire about going onto liquid shakes, these can help with calming the tum down and have the required calories/nutrients to also help with weight gain. With regards to the fatigue have you ever had ay of your vitamin levels checked? It can be in part down to the fact the body is going through a lot with the flare up but it may also be you have a vitamin deficiency - common in people with Crohn's.

Please keep us updated with how you get on.

Hi Noah and welcome :)

Frankly, I'm not all that surprised that your medications aren't working that well. Budesonide is decent but it sounds like your Crohn's is more severe than it can handle. Balsalazide, well, that's pretty useless considering it's for Ulcerative Colitis and is delivered in tact to the colon where bacteria specific to the colon then release the medication. Point being, if your inflammation is in your ileum, all the balsalazide is doing is waving to it as it heads past it on the way to the colon. You might want to discuss this with your doctor. You can read about that here and print out the pertinent info for your doctor if you like.

Is this the same doctor that put you on the biologics way back when or a new one?

Hi David, so the answer to your question about my doctor.. He is new and I've been using him for about a 2 months now. Not sure how I feel about him yet

My doc before him was the best. Unfortunately, he was a children's doctor and kept seeing me till I was 21.

So not sure if I'm gonna keep him.

Well thanks guys for the posts and help

I had a feeling that was the case but wanted to be diplomatic :) Considering your past use of medication, I would suggest finding a GI who is really well educated on Crohn's Disease and all the intricacies that come along with properly managing it. I'm sure your doctor is very smart, but IBD is a specialty in and of itself in my opinion.
