Has anyone ever experienced hives as a symptom of their CD??? I have never before, up until this last week. I've heard that sometimes anesthesia can bring on skin conditions, and this has happened to my mother with a surgery that she's had...just curious if it's a symptom of the disease, or the anesthesia?

Never had them until I tried to taper from Entocort, not sure if the two are related though.

Might be the meds. Hives is an allergic response to something. My kid broke out in severe hives, face and lips swelled up after a round of Bactrim. Doc said that some folks just develop allergies to meds that in the past they tolerated without any problem.

Take benedryl and call the doc. They'll want to know about this.

I get bumps that are like pimples, but they don't squeeze and they hurt like a mofo (little bigger too). I get them all over my body, but usually on sporadically (maybe a couple on my back, some on my arm, a few on my torso, a bit on my leg) My bf says they look like hives, but I dunno. I think they come along when I'm in the beginning of a flare, because I get them at the end of every Remicade treatment.

I never got hives till I had Crohn's. Mine started weeks after starting meds, but my Dr. didn't think it was an allergic reaction. Who knows why I got them! I took benadryl and they cleared up after a week or two.

Rashes are common in people with autoimmune disorders. I have one that pops up on my right arm every so often. It does look like hives, but it doesn't really itch that much, so it's not hives..............unless sometimes hives don't itch?

There is no evidence that hives can be caused by crohn's nor is it plausible considering the mechanisms involved in crohn's disease. Inflammatory rashes on the other hand can be caused by crohn's disease as well as most other autoimmune diseases.

I should know, my face is covered in a rash right now and my skin is flaking off leaving dandruff all over my glasses which I now have to clean repeatedly all day. It's quite disgusting and humiliating but that's what I get for tapering my prednisone.

But, there is an autoimmune disease that consists of chronic hives and does have a higher prevalence in people who have other autoimmune diseases. It's a separate disorder though and is related to auto-antibodies directed at the receptor FcεRI located on skin mast cells. It's not related to TNF or other crohn's related antibodies.

In your case it does not sound like a chronic condition but a reaction to something. In a hospital it can be anything from latex that's in gloves and all kinds of equipment including some injections, to the anesthesia as you assume or just about any other medication.

I went to my GP today...just to ask some questions and get another appt with my GI, and when I told him of the hives, he summed it up to stress...which makes sense...we're in the process of buying a house, and have been talking about trying for a baby (!!), so there have been alot of things on my mind lately...

I am going to take some benadryl though, and see if that helps any. They're not really to the point where they're EVERYWHERE...just enough to be annoying.
