Hi

apologies if I've posted in the wrong place, but I need diet advice.

I had surgery in March to remove a severe stricture at TI/Ceacum (SP). Since then I can't stop GAINING WEIGHT!

Normally for a lady with Crohn's that would be good....BUT.....my BMI is 27.13!!!

I have always been "chunky" apart from when severely sick, like nearly dead sick. But the weight has always come right back!

So... I've tried Paleo (gained), low fat high fibre (gained plus ouch stomach cramps)!!!, done the "what the heck, whatever "(gained).

So what's a girl to do?

I like food. I can eat. I can eat better (post surgery). I don't eat LOADS! (before any smart**se states the obvious)

My last efforts left me with bad rectal bleeding (scared to f*rt).

So guys and girls, any help apreciated!!!

Have you considered taking up smoking or possibly eating many potatoes? (joking!)

I used to work with a women that developed lung cancer (this was before she smoked). After having part of a lung removed, I was told, she gained weigh for some reason. After that she took up smoking to drop the pounds so she could be at a healthy weight. :ybatty: I have to admit she was thin, winded and quite cranky.

I've seen write ups that if avoiding grains and dairy doesn't lead to weight loss, to next look into thyroid testing. Some tips on that ~

"Thyroid Tune-up Checklist"

Good luck!

Ha bloody ha!!

I used to smoke (3 years ago), I reckon if I started again I'd drop the pounds (but I don't miss the wheeze in the morning)!!!

Keep a food journal for a few days and see how many calories you're actually getting. Then you can know (and we can advise you) if you're simply eating too much or if it's a different problem altogether.

Also, please tell us what your activity level is like, and your current height and weight.

I know quite a bit about weight, metabolism, and diets.

Diets generally don't work except in the short term.
Mindful eating is a good approach to eating. If you are interested in learning more, you may find a book at your library. I recommend this one http://www.amazon.com/dp/1590305310 but there are a lot of them to choose from.
Best wishes!

I am 5 feet 5 inches and 165lbs. I would say I am lightly active. I have an office job, but have two lively boys, do all my own housework (lol!) and do karate once a week. I went to the gym more before I took more hours and although this is benficial (MONEY!!) it cuts into gym time.

I,ve been chunky(tubby)for years watching my diet carefully but not losing anything.i,m on lots of meds could be a factor but I see your not,is it possible that after your operation you just feel well with a better appetite than before?comes under the heading result!!good luck

I have recently lost a lot of weight 26Ibs in 12 weeks. I have still got a lot more to lose but I recently found out I have food allergy. Wheat, so totally cut Gluten out. Lactose Intolerant and Eggs. So totally cut out dairy. Since I have cut all this out my Crohn's has been ok. Still having a few bad days but not as much. Hope you find the source to your problems. XXX

To lose weight on Paleo, reduce your carbohydrates. If you keep your carbohydrates under about 40-60 grams a day, your body enters into a state of ketosis, which makes it virtually impossible for it to metabolize all the calories you consume. It is the same principle that applies to the South Beach diet, along with other diets that restrict carbs -- all of which are founded in the principles orginally developed by the Adkins diet, over 40 years ago.

Keep your carbs under 40-60 grams, and you can eat a dozen eggs, with a stick of butter and a pound of steak for breakfast, and still lose weight--I have! Only for short periods of time though, like to lose weight to fit into a killer dress for a formal function, such as weddings. bigget problem is as soon as you stop, you usually will regain all the weight you lost. Been there, done that too, but for me, that's ok, as long as my pics for whatever function I lost the weight for, look great! Once I had to fit into a size 2 Dolce and Gabanna, and it's not like I could have gone out and found the same dress in a different size. certainly not for the deeply discount price I bought it for. I had 4 weeks to lose 15 pounds and it rolled right off.

Are you on prednisone or any other drug that could be preventing you from losing weight?

Otherwise, as we get older, most people's metabolism does slow down, making it increasingly more difficult to lose weight. Unfortunate fact of life. I find I do best with a primarily paleo diet, although I do "cheat" somewhat, but at all costs, avoid any preprocessed foods, cooking everything from scratch, as organic and natural as possible. we grow, can and freeze our own veggies, and even make our own ketchup, and various fermented foods, including kefir, kombucha, sourdough bread, etc.

One of the problems with preprocessed foods it contains more empty calories (usually sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup--which we avoid at all costs), than it normally would or should. That's aside from the chemicals, salt, and preservatives. Once you get used to cooking from scratch, preprocessed foods taste like crap.

Everyone's different though, and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for all. so you might want to try different diets and combinations of foods until you hit on what works for you.

best of luck!
