How do you tell if pain is from IBD or IBS

It's now believed you can have both. IBD is inflammation, IBS is a functional problem where the muscles don't work in a coordinated way, so if you have inflammation plus the muscle problem you have both.

Oh right thanks, didn't know that. How do they tell though that the symptoms are caused specifically by muscle co-ordination problems? Surely if you had inflammation there that would explain all and any problems and they'd tell you it was IBD.

I think if you get treated for IBD and your tests show no active inflammation, but are still having symptoms like pain and diarrhea they would try you on IBS meds. But I'm not sure.

There have been lots of research here in the UK and a professor at Manchester (Prof Peter Whorwell) is using hypnotherapy to help patients with IBS and is being very successful in helping them to relief their symptoms.

He now employs a hypnotherapist in his department.

I'm watching how well it goes as I am a clinical hypnotherapist and have had advanced training on IBS hypnotherapy.

Ther's not much on Crohns and hypnotherapy but I'm hoping it will help alleviate some of the symptoms one day.

I have both IBS and IBD.
My IBS is treated with a low-dose anti-depressant, (Doc told me it stops the pain receptors in my spine) which stops my left-sided pain and rumbles all over my lower abdomen. When I start having that pain again, my GI ups the dosage a little bit and the pain goes away. Right now, I'm in a Crohn's flare, my pain is right-sided and the pain feels different. (I have a stricture of the terminal Ileum). So you can definitely have both.

Well this has certainly got me thinking. At the moment I think that IBD is a disease and just because the inflammation goes that shouldn't mean things will be perfect in that department. After all it causes things like mouth ulcers and skin rashes which suggests an active element of the disease.

I have IBS (Mike has CD). Believe it or not, exercise helps my IBS. I walk about 3 miles a day. The doc prescribed bentyl and I hardly take it. I do use Benefiber twice a day. But I do not know if that is a good idea with an IBD.
