Hi guy,

So I've finally been booked in for a pre op assessment and MRI but still don't have a date for the actual op. From experience, once you have the pre op tests, how long after is the surgery performed?

I'm thinking they wouldn't do the tests if the operation still a long time away? Or are they just getting this out of the way and it could still take months?

Any indication would be appreciated.

Hi Marx,

In my experience, both with my son and through work, a pre op is normally conducted within 3 weeks of an operation, with the most common time frame being a week or less before the op.

For my son pre op was two days prior to surgery.

Dusty. :)

If you're having it on the NHS, it will probably be longer than that. If your surgery isn't urgent, a few months is more likely.

Wow, really UnXmas? :( That sucks, not to mention ridiculous when you are dealing with conditions like Crohn's.

Unxmas - that's exactly what I didn't want to hear lol. Yes, mine is on the NHS but it's urgent so I'm hoping sooner rather than later.

Aww sorry. Yeah, I know it seems like a long time when you just want to get it done. You might be lucky though - sometimes they'll have a cancellation and call you in straight away. I've never had to have urgent surgery though, so you probably won't have to wait as long.

I appreciate the info, thanks! I just don't get it though? Why would they take blood tests if the op is gonna be so far away. I just assumed that once they call you for a pre op, the op is around the corner. Oh well, I'll just have to wait and see :) and btw what's semi laparoscopic?

I'm not in the UK but here, I have a vague souvenir that I was trying to know my surgery date (I had been told it would be between this and that) and I had hard time getting an answer. Then they called me for pre-op test maybe around a week prior to surgery, I think it might be even less than a week.

Break them down lol if you get on their case hopefully they will push things through!!
Ah thanks i have been okay my main problem is diarrhea ugh but expected it after surgery especially as they took out the ileum but last few days had blood and was sick just hoping itll pass. All in all though have recovered so well and going back to work tomorrow!!!
Are you any closer to getting a date?!

Hi ,it's usually within a couple of weeks, most times though in the UK,you may get it cancelled like I was,and then recalled again within about a month,So all in all I would be saying for weeks max.

Good luck,my new date is this Tuesday July 9th ,getting a bit nervy again now.

Ahhh annoying D and yeah hopefully it will pass, if not defo mention it to your GI ASAP. But I'm glad to hear you're doing ok on the whole. Wow you're going back to work already? Hope it goes/went well!

Nope, no closer to a date yet, but I'm seeing my surgeon on Tuesday and my pre op is next Friday. Can't wait for it tbh.

Thanks Trish! Couple of weeks sounds great! :D I'd even settle for four lol

How annoying about the cancellation! But you're almost there again. Hope it all goes well for you Trish!

Thanks Marxx and Sophie for your kind words
Marxx I think your op will def be in the next four weeks,,I know they do not usually leave a gap between pre op and actual op of more than 4-5 weeks, and that's of a theatre sister.
good luck xxxxx

Am I the only one being left for months then? Maybe someone arranging the waiting lists doesn't like me. I've had I think five surgeries. The last one I waited about three weeks, but I was called early because of a cancellation. I definitely waited longer than that before. Maybe because my surgeries have never been urgent?

I had an appointment a couple of weeks ago when I was put on the waiting list for surgery again. I haven't heard anything about either the pre-op or the meeting with the stoma nurse yet, so I'm thinking it's going to take a while.

I have my pre op tests and meeting with stoma nurse, surgeon and anesthesia doctor 26th July and my surgery is 31th July.

It was around 6 inches of the terminal ileum and the ileocaecal valve. Do you have any further info yet?

Thanks soph! Yeah I met with my surgeon today. The good news is I,ll be having the op end of July he said. But the bad news, it won't be laparoscopic and I might (small chance) need a bag. :( also he'll be cutting out around 30-40cm out of mine. I just can't wait to get it over and done with to be honest.

How come it wont be laparoscopic? you will be FINE they have to say small chance of bag to everyone dont panic! Glad you have a date in the diary though!

I hope I won't need a bag! It won't be keyhole because he'll be taking out a big chunk and will need to open me up. He said he'll try laporscopic first, but will more than likely open me up. Thanks for all the info and support Sophie, you've been amazing!

Ahh anytime! Im sure you wont need a bag but even if you do itll be temporary so try stay calm! Keep me posted!!
