Hi, I had a small bowel resection on 10th December 2012. I have been feeling okay, however, I have had alot of diarrhoea and today has been particularly bad. I understand it is early days since my surgery, but will this ease?

Hi Sally!

It is normal to have D after surgery and it can take up to 6 months to become normal. It all depend on your intestines and how long it takes for them to adjust to the surgical changes. If you are concerned talk to your doctor about it he might give you something to reduce D. also make sure you stay hydrated because D can cause electrolytes imbalance and you don't want to get sick from dehydration.

Hi Sally and welcome :)

I've moved your thread from the "Your Story" forum here to surgery since it only deals with a surgery question. If you'd like to tell us a little about yourself in a "Your Story" thread, we'd love to get to know you and properly welcome you.

I wish you well.

Hi Sally,

My intestinal joint always ended up very, very sore within two weeks of surgery, and yes, it was the start of the next stricture. I'm afraid my diarrhoea doesn't stop! Don't let that put you off. You might need to go through a whole host of medications to find the right ones for you. Did you have much of the large bowel removed? If not then i suspect that in a month or two you might be back to normal.

good luck and welcome to the forum

I am a little over 3 weeks out, and the sudden, urgent need to hit the bathroom has really eased up over the last week. As others have stated, it really depends on how much you had removed, and even then everyone will react differently. My doc said I should know how things will be long term after about two months or so.

In my resection I had the D. For quite a while afterward. It does get better but it takes time. My last scope showed inflammation at the surgery site. I started Humira and Budesonide after the surgery. All in the name of getting it under control. I still take Loperimide for D control.

Hi Sally. I hope that things are getting better by the day. Yes, recovery after a big op does teach us patience if we let it.

I had resection Dec. 11. I had horrible D the first 5 days or so. It has eased up but I still have it. Not as bad as before the operation so I remain hopeful. I was discouraged right after surgery b/c the D was so bad. I've read a lot of posts on here and many say it takes a couple of months or more to get to what is "normal" for you. Everyone's normal is different I'm assuming. Good luck!
