I got setons a few months ago and with humira the fistulas healed, but the setons are staying in for a few more months.

How do you deal with smell and leaking? They aren't leaking pus anymore but some kind of liquid drainage is still happening.

It seems like everytime I sit down and get up my underwear is wet.

Hi Kronic,
I use panty liners in my underwear and a round cotton makeup pad folded in half and placed between my butt cheeks. I do this every day and at night and keep am eye on them in case they need to be changed. Keeping that area fresh as possible should help with the smell and mess.

If the drainage is really heavy sometimes a sponge type wound dressing works better.

Good luck!

I do the same as Sailorluna. Also baby wipes but watch the ingredients as the main ones like huggies and pampers (even the sensitive ones) have bad stuff in them and I really don't know why more isn't said about this!! Anyway, Baby Bamboo are my favs. They have natural ingredients with essential oils like tea tree and lavender :)

I don't have a seton but I have an abscess that I wash with Dove soap. I don't know if I should be, but it doesn't seem to bother anything and it keeps it feeling fresh. When I got really bad drainage I had to wear female pads because if not it would soak right through my pants.

Another tip I've heard is to put a dryer sheet in your back pocket so the smell would hopefully over power the smell of the abscess, seton, etc.

I don't have setons but I get pretty regular drainage from some combination of old fistulas, fissures and who knows what else (I'm not even really sure what's going on down there anymore).

I use about 4-5 squares of toilet paper folded up twice and then wedged between my cheeks. I change the dressing out a few times a day and this keeps me from having wet spots on my pants all the time.

PS - I like this forum a lot. I've never told anyone in my life any of this, but I feel OK typing it out for you guys.

I use hand held shower after BM at home and keep gauze between my cheeks and change them few times per day. Also, Calmoseptine lotion works great to keep that area dry.

I don't have a problem anymore, the whole area was surgically removed, anus, rectum and surrounding tissues. When I did have multiple fistulas and abscesses I would alway wipe with Kleenex toilet wipes- they are flush able. I would wear a sanitary pad, the long overnight ones would go around far enough to cover all leaks. I would check and change this as needed. When I had bleeding I would also sandwich a makeup removal pad between my butt cheeks. I also wear perfume always and carry a small bottle of perfume with me to coverup any odours. I do like the sound of the dryer sheet in the pocket!

I have been told that I/you are the only one who can smell it, but I don't have enough faith in that.
