I've never had a rectal abcess. But I have soreness and tenderness around my anal and rectal area. I don't know if there is a lump can't feel one. How do you know if it is an abcess?

I don't know about anal abcesses, since I've never had one. But, when I had my abcess, it was a lump and it was very sore. I get that sore and tender feeling too, but mines not constant. Is it constant or just sometimes pain?

It's constant soreness can't feel a lump but it is painful all of the time. It just started today.

I had a perianal abcess in March 2008. I thought it was a bad hemmorrhoid. I couldn't sit and the paid was constant and progressivly got worse. Went to ER on Saturday and they said it was hemmorrhoids and sent me home with percocets and suppositories. The drugs gave me no realief, so I went back Sunday morning. Did a CT and found the abcess. I had emergency surgery that inight and back on my feet in a week. Please keep us posted!

This forum is amazing. I just came on to post that I have symptoms of a hemmorrhoid, but yet it's different. I can't sit, there's some blood when I wipe, I can feel a lump, the anal pain is severe, and I have lower abdominal pain. Thank you Bethy for your question and all of you for your comments. I just looked up perianal abscess. I usuallly have a hard time discussing these things. All of you make this so easy and I don't feel so alone and scared. I think I'll be calling my GI first thing tomorrow morning. Bethy, I hope you feel better soon.

I just had fistula surgery today after about 2 years of ever present pain in the arse. i have a fissure (crack) and a fistula (abcess). it stung and burned and was WAY WAY worse after a BM, would just subside and then i would have to go again. ask your GI to look at it. wiith a fistula there isnt always a bump. my GI wouldnt do the rectal exam BUT he did send me to an excellent colorectal surgeon who did.
bethy - does it get worse when you go? does sitting in a tepid bath ease the discomfort?

Planetjen - you had surgery today and posting tonight trying to help someone else? I'm in awe! I think I have a new hero.

Aw shucks! *blush* I'm so happy to be feeling better, i think that must have been quite an infection. nice to have people to share with regarding our bum holes :) My hubs is very supportive but this is great to have other crohnies to talk to.

I've had perianal abcesses and fistulas. I haven't needed any surgery yet, but I call my GI pretty quickly and he prescribes antibiotics (10 days of Flagyl and Cipro) regardless of whether I have a fistula or an abcess.

I also hot water compress the abcess/fistula a few times a day---the abcess usually responds well and bursts out at some point. Yucky, but it feels soooo much better. And the hot water compress is really soothing! With the antibiotics, it takes about three to four days and I can feel a difference.

With my Crohns I seems to always get abcess in exactly the same spot each time.

I know when they are coming as its an uncomfortable feeling and sore to touch.

I try and taken antibiotics but sometimes this doesn’t work. They are painful and you can’t sit down. I have had about 4 drained in the last couple of years, took about a week to recover then I was alright!

mine is hurting again today. dammit! still not as bad as before the surgery. will i ever have a normal butt again?
