Does anyone know anything about how Humira and Imuran would affect a pregnancy? There is a possiblitiy I may be pregnant.Never felt like this before. We find out next week for sure.I am not suppose to get pregnant as its high risk for the baby and I both. But I just can't see myself terminating a pregnancy if I am.My husband is nervous but feels the same as I.Please does anyone have know anything about how these drugs may affect a pregnancy?

Imuran is a pregnancy category D in the US which is "There is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience or studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks."

Humira is a pregnancy category B in the US- "Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester."

Basically, you shouldn't really be on Imuran while pregnant... Humira isn't so bad. If you are pregnant the best thing would be to get on prenatal vitamins ASAP and become as healthy as possible if you aren't going to terminate. The first trimester is the single most important time in the development of a baby.

I am currently on Humira and trying to get pregnant. My GI doc says that Humira is okay to take, but he doesn't really recommend the Imuran and drugs like that. The doc told me that the worst thing I can do is stop taking the Humira if I get pregnant, because if I get sicker from not being on medicine that will be worse for both me and baby.

Also, I have heard of people taking 6MP and Imuran while pregnant and the baby was just fine. So I guess its really just in what you and your doctor feel most comfortable with.

Okay I am trying to get as much info as I can.Sadly I have gotten tossed around with doctors that I can't even think straight because I don't know what the effects are or would be.Like I have doctors who say no on getting pregnant and others who say its okay but higher risk. They don't know where my organs are even placed any more and some said more then likely I have a C-Section.Also I am on a pre-natal because it has the best source of Iron for me the doctors said.So I have heads up there and the folic acid too.

I don't blame you there! My cousin is an OBGYN and I was talking to her about Crohn's and pregnancy, and she said she has had several patients who were on Remicade during their pregnancy and they did amazingly. She has known 1 so far that was on Humira and they did good too.

What my GI was saying about the biologic type drugs is that they didn't do any types of trials on pregnant women. So I've kind of heard from both sides that it seems like they are safe to take. If I were you though, I'd seriously reconsider the Imuran. I know I'm not a doctor, that's just my own opinion.

From things I've read, it seems that a lot of people do fairly well while pregnant.

Are you in remission right now?

I am still waiting to hear if I am in remission.I feel alot better except for my side effects from the drugs.I haven 't had a flare up in almost 7months.But since we moved and then moved again I haven't heard from a doctor on it.I know the last time I was put in remission was a week before my husband had come home for his R&R from Iraq.It lasted 8months and I have been out of it for over a year now.

I'm on azathioprine (imuran) & my consultant has given me the green light to try for a baby this summer. I wouldn't be well enough to consider trying to get pregnant without this medication.

Well I went to the doctor's today and found out I am not pregnant. No instead I find out that gained 8lbs after just losing 5lbs in a month. And because of all this I have been put on an antidepressant because I got upset and angry about it all.Sorry one of those days you just get so aggravated that you need to vent.

Has anyone here taken a baby to term while on a biological? I want to have a baby but my doctor wants me to go on a biological.

i have asked my gastroenterologist and he told me that , their is a lot of patient taking imuran for different diseases and they are doing fine and their baby are normal .
also i asked rhumatologist because a lot of patent with rhumatologic disease are taking imuran and he told that also he has a lot of his patient on imuran and they are getting pregnant and deliver normal baby.
actually he was surprised when i told him that imuran is category D .

For what it's worth, I'm on 6MP and Remicade, and recently got the green light to TTC when we're ready from my dr. She said to stay on the 6MP all the way through, but that I had to stop Remicade at some point (she didn't remember exactly which week, but we'll figure that out later) temporarily, and then right after I deliver, get Remicade again.

MyButt,

I delivered a baby back in April. I'm on Humira and she was perfectly healthy. She was 3 weeks early, but that is just because I ended up getting pancreatitis and we had to deliver her early because I was so sick.

I took Humira the entire way through. Baby is healthy as can be still. :)
