This has been a nightmare to say the least. My husband had a colonoscopy on feb 23. Because of bloody stools Where he was diagnosed with c diff and possible colitis. Given vanca and dr said he should be feeling lots better by Monday. Fast forward to that Monday and we were in the ER. At that point they changed his antibiotic and also gave him lialda. Days go by and no improvement so he was given a steroid.

He never got better but he did start having some good times during the day with out the severe pain. Going to the bathroom was another story because te pain was so intense. antibiotics run out last Thursday and he was admitted to the hospital on Monday evening. He went down hill pretty fast.

They started him on asacol (3 400mg pills/ 4 times a day) in the hospital and also a mesaline (sp) enema twice a day, vanco again and clear liquids. He's also getting Iv fluids.

Oh and his biopsies came back comparable with crohns. Im very confused and now cannot figure out because they say it's the c diff (c diff culture came back neg) but dr says with all the inflammation it can come back neg and still be there. if biopsies say crohns the dr is still saying c diff and not really talking about the crohns.

I'm just not sure if I'm missing something

One thing to remember is that sometimes the antibiotics can do a number on the belly. He may want to get on some probiotics to help receover. Hope all goes well.

Wow, I'm so sorry your husband is going through so much. And *hugs* to you as well. Questions:

1. Was it IV steroid? If not, what dose?

2. Have they done a CT scan on him? If not, ask why. If they did, what did it show?

3. Is this a big hospital or some clinic off in the woods? He's under the care of a GI, yes?

4. They may be thinking C-Diff despite the negative test because they may have seen something called, "pseudomembranes" during the colonoscopy which are common with c-diff. Ask if they saw those.

Please keep us updated!

Now isn't the time to be talking probiotics.

So very sorry you and your huband. IBD is a very scary path. You need to ask alot of questions and ask and ask until you both have the answers that you understand.

Make yourself heard! Write down everything they are giving your husbad and what it does. Including IV meds. Also what tests they are running- blood tests and procedures including all xray scans.

I was in the hospital and one day not one Dr came to see me because they all thought I had gone home!

Good luck and I hope you guys are on your way home soon!

1. Was it IV steroid? If not, what dose? His steroid was 60mg by mouth but they stopped it in the hospital so no more steroid.

2. Have they done a CT scan on him? If not, ask why. If they did, what did it show? They did a ct scan in the ER two weeks ago and saw the inflammation but no perforations or anything.

3. Is this a big hospital or some clinic off in the woods? He's under the care of a GI, yes? It is a big hospital and his regular GI doc direct admitted him after we went to his office on Monday.

4. They may be thinking C-Diff despite the negative test because they may have seen something called, "pseudomembranes" during the colonoscopy which are common with c-diff. Ask if they saw those.
Yes they did see those in the colonoscopy but I'm very confused because they say the biopsies came back compatible with crohns but they really only talk about the cdiff.

I answered those questions but was wrong about the steroid. He is on Iv steroid.

So I was there when the dr rounded tonight and he has ruled out c diff. He said his crp only dropped from 55-45 and he would have seen a bigger drop with the antibiotic treatment. He said husband is a very complicated case because he is showing signs of both UC and CD. He said he has lots of eosinophils and that's causing the problems. He has a lot of rectal
Pain and is really scared to eat because it hurts so bad to have diarrhea he cannot imagine what a formed stool would feel like.

I think he said he would say he is undetermined colitis? Or something like that.
