Hi there,
My name is Elizabeth. I am new to this Forum. I have had Crohn's disease for 19 years. When I was diagnosed, there was no internet; so, finding ways of getting help or information from others who suffered with the disease was nearly impossible. I have been hospitalized about 12 times, have had one bowel resection (2 feet of my small intestine), and a few blood transfusions. I have been on about every drug in the book. It has been a long haul. However, the past few years have brought me good health and I have more or less been in remission. I am now pretty much drug free- with the exception of some vitamins and supplements. I attribute most of my good health to the right diet (for me), the right supplements, to using the right pharmaceutical medications when I need them, and, mostly, to managing the stress in my life.

Since my health has improved, I have decided that I want to dedicate my time to making information around illness and health ailments as accesible as possible to those that suffer. I have attempted to do this through my health and wellness website , www.WikiHealth.com. I really believe in the sharing of information and am so happy to see the path that the internet is taking through blog, forums and community networks. I hope this continues so that people who suffer may find solutions and support outside of their local doctor's opinions. I also believe that people who suffer with these crohnic diseases for years often know more about what works than the specialists. I hope that people may use things like my website to share their knowledge.

Please check it out and let me knwo your thoughts. There are a number of articles related to Crohn's and Colitis.... however, I would love to see it have a whole lot more. Feel free to add an article or edit ones that are already there; (this is the benefit of a wiki, anyone can write or edit the content.). Thanks for your support! :)

hey jeff,
i take probiotics (garden of life brand, but most any form of good acidophilus will do). i take one every morning on empty stomach and every night. more is good too. these are probably the most important.
i also take a good food based form of multi (so it is more digestable). extra b12 is key.
i take fish oil capsules- a few times a day and try to put omega 3 oil on lots my food. think this makes a big difference too.
i also have to take calcium as i now have osteoporosis as well from the darn disease.
and i take L-glutamine for the diarrehea- this really helps! also heals bowel wall.

here is full article that i wrote on my website that lists supplements that are good from crohn's. please add anything other supplements to article that you found work for you: http://www.wikihealth.com/Dietary_supplements_for_Crohn's_disease.

Thanks, I just wanted to know what you take. I am going to start taking a multivitamin, food based of course, and some fish oil.

Welcome to the forum Elizabeth!

I definately am a big believer in the power of Wiki's, and actually tried to get one going here for Crohn's Disease. We got about 75 pages on it, but it was not something that was easy for members to learn to use so we unfortunately have not continued with the project.

Even without the internet, there have definately been plenty of books written about the disease. It is not as easy to go through, but all basic information is there. I definately am not complaining about the internet though, as it has made things for all of us much easier (especially when looking for information on specific supplements and treatment options). And of course we can have communities like this with the internet! :D

I am sure many members would love to learn from your expertise so we hope you stick around. Your wiki idea is wonderful (I had thought of it to awhile back... glad you made this a reality though!) and I hope we can all help out a bit.

Tonya- I love your comment about the "more we share, the more we have". I could not agree with that more! This is where I am basing my life passion in health right now. I truly believe that the more information we share, the more we know, the smarter we are, and the more likely we are to heal ourselves.

Thanks for your kind words.

Hi Elizabeth

Sharing information is the best thing we can do to help each other, and allow our bodies to heal themselves.

Since having Crohn's, I have read so many health info, that I'm now considered the doctor of my office. everybody who has digestive problems comes to me for advice, and I'm an engineer :)))

I'm glad the quote reached out and touched you and I agree completely. I had put Crohn's on the back burner for a few years hoping I guess that it would stay at bay. Unfortunately, it came back to bite me in the butt (no pun intended, lol) This forum has done wonders for me and I hope it does the same for you.

Thanks!

all the support on this site is great!
i am happy to hear that everyone is hungry for knowledge and turning to each other and information sharing to get it.

i have a bunch of questions on crohn's stuff so will go to the other sections of the forum to ask them!

looking forward to chatting with you all.

PS-
Mazen: you should contribute some your knowledge in an article on wikihealth! seriously, articles on crohn's stuff are really popular. there is demand out there for more of it! :)

Hey Mazen, I'm sorry I have to hijack this thread for a second buts its related. Anyways I am the school "doctor" on any GI problem. Its funny kids will come up to me and ask me questions about whats going on in their stomaches. I also seem to just over hear someone talking about how their tummy hurts and I immediately ask what kind of pain and where and they are like, "It's not that weird disease/ disorder thing you have, it's just a tummy ache."LOL

I am done, sorry bout dat

Jeff-
I love that! i used to get the same thing when i was younger. As i have gotten older, people have gotten a little more sensitive... do you ever get asked, " are you going to give me that disease?" i used to get that all the time! not lol :(

Hey Mike (or anyone)-
do you know how i get my Avatar photo to show up on this forum? I have it posted on my zoints profile but for some reason it is not coming up here. let me know if any of you know.

thanks!

Aloha Elizabeth and welcome to the forum. Just took a quick peek at your wiki & bookmarked it for later study. What a wonderful service you are providing to so many people!

I'd love to see something over there on Short Bowel Syndrome. There's so little available. The only thing I'd be able to do is copy other articles, and I'm not into plagerism, so I think I won't do that! :ylol: There doesn't seem to be a whole lot out there about it, and most mentions are only a few sentences. Beside, I'm a total technophobe & wikis seem a little scarey to me. I'm learning though, and may be able to carry my own weight around here someday!

I'm glad you're here Elizbeth, and hope you'll be back often. You won't find me too helpful (because I don't have Crohn's or IBS) but there are many folks here with a lot of knowledge about both conditions and the sharing is good for everyone. And hey, my shoulders are always available for leaning on, and my ears are open for listening, so I guess I can be useful from time to time, too.

Putting my ear to the ground and eavesdropping. If you click on my zoints, you can see my shining face, but it just does not want to come over here!

LOL! That's not where I was going before because I don't think I've ever seen those options. Let's see if it worked!

Does this wiki (or is there another wiki that does) reveiw certain supliments and alternative medecines? There is info all over the interWeb about certain supliments but I can't seem to find one good source. Seems like a wiki would be good for this.
