I was my University's Media School because someone on my course decided to hire out the screening room for their birthday so we could have a movie night with the big screen and order food to the building etc. It was all fun and games until it was time to go home and I got about 15 seconds warning that I needed the bathroom! I was about 5 feet from the bathroom door when I just exploded. Took me so long to get myself cleaned up that by the time I emerged everyone had left and I had to walk home by myself, prompting me to call my poor mum and wake her up at 1am to vent.

It could've been worse, I mean there was a bathroom to clean up in, no one saw/noticed, and I was on my way home anyway so it didn't ruin my evening. It was just a bit upsetting because in the 5 years I've had IDB this has never actually happened before (I know, I'm very lucky lol). I've had the odd wet fat but a never a full blown b/m in my boxers! I've also been on Humira for a month and after having a shot on Friday, I was feeling GREAT all through Sunday - I was full of energy, felt really happy, and had only been to the bathroom twice all day (with no blood either). Then this happened and has me thinking the injections aren't really working for me.

Anyway, I guess I've realised a fear now and made it to through to the other side ;) Just thought I'd share with some people who know about this all too well haha.

Hope you feel better soon!

Hi Ian, so sorry to hear that this happened to you, you must have felt awful!

I can not claim to know how you feel, I do not have Crohns, but my 19 year old son ,Danni, has recently been diagnosed with Crohns Colitis. In fact is was only just last Tuesday that he was diagnosed, after he spent 11 days in hospital and he was very unwell.

Before the hospital he had a few accidents, especially during the night. He found this so distressing, it's not nice at any age, but when you are as young as you and my son are you should'nt have these worries...My heart goes out to you.

My Son seems a bit better now, is only going to the toilet 3/5...as opposed to 12 +!...He is just on Pentassa 4000mg a day. I have tried to encourage him to come to this forum but I don't think he is ready just yet.

I really hope your meds start to work better for you soon!...By the way, we are in the UK as well! :)

All the best, Lorraine (Mum of Son with Crohns)

Hiya Ian

I'm not sure about the Humira, but wanted to empathise! It's no joke, I've done it my self!
And yeah, we make it to the other side, unscathed and quietly whistling!

Sorry to hear of this happening to you!

At least it was good timing! The first time it happened to me I was in the middle of a crowded shopping center with no bathroom nearby. It was ghastly! Well, I cant say I am looking back and laughing. Sadly, as the years went on, I just stopped going out much in order to avoid these incidents that reoccurred with increasing frequency! Mind you, I was on little or no medication for 20+ years so why be surprised. At least you are being treated, and should have some improvement shortly. And then hopefully fewer 'accidents' occcuring!

Good luck with meds!

Ian - Welcome to the club! Sounds like the circumstances were as good as can be for such a catastrophe! Hopefully you have a good friend you can call in case it happens again and you need asssistance!

Of course, I do hope this is an isolated event and it never happens again!

Hi Ian. I just wanted to say how sorry I am this happened. I've never had a full-blown explosion but have come mighty close a few times in public and have had small accidents at home so can understand.

I'm glad it turned out okay for you relatively speaking and you had an ear to vent to. And we all understand.

I have not had an accident in a public place...yet...however...I have had several walking in the door to my home. When you said you were so close to the toilet...I am reminded of how many times I have driven home...having to go so badly...and I will drive and drive and the waves come and go...and I tell myself...I am alone in the car...if I have to go I have to go and I will deal with what I have to deal with if an accident happens...its not the end of the world...and it seems like its always when I am in my driveway that I can't hold it anymore. I will race in and...well...you know the rest of this story. I almost wonder if our bodies know the bathroom is near and can sense it...and just releases somehow. I don't know...but its happened too many times to be a coincidence for me. I'm sorry this happened to you but at least nobody was around. You are not alone. I think even people without our disease has this happen...just not nearly as frequently.

Ian I am so sorry to hear about that, it's a special kind of awful feeling isn't it, when that happens, and even though we know it's not our fault, it still doesn't help much.

I was 19 too when my IBD started a few years ago and 19 when I had my first accident at home (been my only one thankfully but several very, very close calls, when i've been out.)

I really feel with you... I have had one incident when I was 22 years old. I was on my way home from dinner, and I knew in the car I was in trouble. I managed to run up the stairs in my student-shared appartment (I lived with 4 other students) and LUCKILY there was no-one home as I made a mess of the bathroom. I've had near-incidents several times after, but luckily I've allways managed. I dread being in a public place and have an accident, but I guess thats the way of the decease. I just try to have it in the back of my mind at all times, and there are times I have to stay at work for a couple of hours longer, just to be sure I wont have an accident on my way home. I also know at all times where my toilet-options are when I'm outside.

Thanks for the responses everyone! Nice to hear from other people who know first hand how mortifying it is! But I got over it pretty quickly, the circumstances could've been MUCH worse. I might have to start putting one of those kits together I hear people talking about (extra underwear, wipes, air freshner etc haha).

Ellowyne, sorry to hear about your son, hope he continues to get better. I'm sure he'll come around to the idea of the forum eventually, you get to a point where you have to talk about your bowel movements so often and to so many different people that it becomes normal and you lose all sense of boundaries around the subject lol. I'm constantly grossing out my housemates with blunt descriptions of what my body's doing! Treading on egg shells and feeling embarrassed starts to feel like too much effort ;)

Ian,

I've had Crohn's for 29 years now and I can totally relate. I've had many, many close calls, but only a few public explosions... and only one that caused me any real embarrassment. I was Christmas shopping at the mall with my daughter when she was 15. We had just eaten and I felt that familiar rumble so I made my way to the Men’s room. I didn’t quite make it, and exploded just before I got into the toilet stall.

The mall was packed, and I had messed my pants, underwear, socks and shoes. There was no way I could clean up and get out of the bathroom, so I called my daughter’s cell and had her go buy me new pants, underwear, socks and shoes... plus a facecloth, soap, and a few bottles of water. She got some guy to bring it into the bathroom for me and I cleaned up.

What would I have done if she wasn’t there? Who knows… maybe I would have just sat there ‘till closing time! Sometimes you just have to have a sense of humour about it all.

Wow SlimCat...imgaine what life was like without cell phones!!! I see a similiar theme...its the explosion just as you are about to reach the toilet...I think our bodies know we are close! Sometimes, for me, its just gas. I remember years ago...at a wedding shower...waiting for the bathroom in line...long line...and let out some gas by accident...oops...excuse me! What the heck are you supposed to do? Too bad there wasn't something we could eat that would give us a pretty fragrance...I will have to ask my sister in law because she farts roses!!!

And then spent the night. Yep, nodding head.

Ian, the first time I loaded up my drawers was at work one night. We had been joking with a guy about getting drunk and filling his drawers. Lo and behold, I went to step up on the fork truck and all heck broke loose. Never teased anyone again. I've been called Mister Poopy Pants for many years. I guess I've learned to deal with it with a good sense of humor.

It happens to most of us. All you can do is clean up and move forward.

Hi Ian! I just wanted to say how sorry I am this happened to you. The first time this happened to me I was on a driving trip to Yellowstone National Park, which is a mountainous rural area. The cramps were so bad when we finally pulled over at a hunting lodge (of all places) I couldn't even straighten up to make a run for it...so I loaded my drawers in front of a roomful of hunters. There was only one toliet in the place, and everyone was so shocked they just stared at me. I pounded on the door of the bathroom and cut in front of a long line of men and dashed in. It took so long to clean up (I even loaded my shoes lol) they were all pretty mad at me when I came out. Needless to say my husband and I booked it out of there!

As time passes the embarrassment passes, and it just becomes a funny story, trust me!

You seem to be dealing with it well, Ian. Good for you. Here is something that might take the sting out of it for you:
My husband & I were on a cruise. We had spent some time in the hot tub and were heading back to our cabin. Like you, I was maybe 5 feet away from a toilet when without warning, crumbling, cramping the volumous explosion occurred. Now, I am not young like you but here I was in a little two piece bikini and this happens right on the middle of the deck. Luckily it was late and no one else was around but it was rather dicey getting back to the cabin.
See, don't you feel better? ;)

I just joined this club! I tell you if you don't laugh you cry:) I must admit it was one club I was hoping not to join! I've just started a new role at work and my boss was over from interstate to spend some time with me. Got to work and thought oh oh! Was on my way to the loo when low and behold I didn't make it. Luckily the lovely lady that sits beside me at work had a spare pair of knickers and after I cleaned myself up I put these on... So I spend the whole day, working beside my new boss, in knickers that were two sizes to big for me, knowing I'd shat my pants in the office - mortifying is not the word! But hey - reading this forum it can always be worse so I'm grateful:) All I can say is crohnies are a tough bunch of people to take this in their stride like we do:)

Hey , ive been diagnosed with Crohns Colitis but before i was diagnosed this happened to me in Marks and Spencer , Thankfully my boyfriend works nearby and came straight round and got me. Can laugh about it now but at the time cried my eyes out. Thankfully it aint happened again since. :)

Ugh!! This has happened to me too many times to count.:(
Be happy though, as this could have been you. hahaha!

Oops! ;)

EDIT: Not too sure about the website being promoted. Seems to be bad taste, but it leads to some strange search website.

Just messed myself this morning - while sitting at work!!! Thank goodness I work right next door to my house!!!!!

Ian - hope you're feeling better and no more accidents!

- Ames

Haha maybe this should be the official thread for 'accidents' ;)

Ames, that sucks! I noticed you say in another thread that you've had a few accidents recently. It's not fair! Working next door to your home is the silver lining I guess, could've been worse! Sorry to hear you're suffering though. I am too somewhat, GI appointment tomorrow because nothing seems to be working. But no more accidents for me at least! Yet...

Hope we both get some relief soon :)

sorry to hear this its happened to me a few times, I have an ileostomy now though so wont be happening again, (unless that explodes)

Christie, that would be my biggest fear if I ever end up having a stoma - if the bag popped I'd be f*****g mortified! I assume that's not a common thing to happen though so here's to you having no more accidents! Hope yours is being kind and giving you a new lease on life :)

I've done it too Ian. That's the beauty of belonging to this forum. Where else can you admit something embarrassing and have so many supporters who have gone through the same thing. We are here for you.

Just to add to AndiGirl's post...not only supporters going through the same thing but all over the world! It amazes me how many of us are out there...:) Its all so bittersweet...

Hi Ian, yes has given me a new lease on life and only had a few accidents which have been at home!! but hopefully getting revearsal soon. I was like you, dreaded ever getting one but do you know wasnt that bad, only time I hate it is when going clubbing with the girls and they are all wearing they slinky tight clothes and I cant!!

I had a temp bag for a year (and about to get a permanent one!) and during that time I had two blow-outs! One was def due to too much coffee! I learned always to carry a spare bag and supplies with me!
