Hey, I have a few questions. I'm 23 years old and next Monday I am scheduled to have my large colon removed and get a permanent ileostomy put in. What should I expect after surgery? Like with life changes...I'm getting more nervous by the day. I'm hoping the surgery does good and I feel better in the weeks following, but with tons of failed attempts to make feel better, I have little hope. Have you gained weight after having a surgery like this? I'm down to 88lbs and I would love to gain some weight. How long after surgery did you start feeling better? Anything will help...

After surgery, it took me a few days to regain my strength and start moving around and probably a couple more till I was confident to potter around and start doing bits and pieces by myself. It's a pretty slow process that initially pissed me off, but it's all good really; things take time.

I couldn't say what effects the surgery will have for you. My understanding is the reasons people have ileostomys vary from person to person. My CD diagnosis came a couple days after my ileostomy and numerous other procedures that took place during a week or so.

I found weight pretty easy to gain, despite losing a lot during hospital. The difficult part I had was my taste buds were absolutely ruined so it took a couple days until I could tolerate tasty savory things, and a couple weeks before I could manage a curry. Other than that, I've just eaten whatever I wanted. Actually, I'd say that being able to eat whatever made me feel quite a bit better. Make a note of the effects of certain things though, for example some fruit juices will go straight through me whereas white wine will take its time.

I felt better within days, and I'd say I'm improving each day since.

All that said, everyone seems to have different experiences, but good luck with it.

Everyone has a different experience. But, drawing from my own, I'd say it took me a good 3 months to feel "back to normal". Take your time with the recovery, don't try to do too much as you could cause yourself a set back. Get all kinds of samples of appliances so that you have them to try after you get home. Most people don't luck out with the perfect bag on the first try...lol Also, keep in mind that your stoma will change in the first weeks that you have it (they usually shrink quite a bit).

Good luck with the surgery! Any questions, fire away!

Hi Katie. Nyx is right - everyone is different. It took me 7 months to really recover from my proctocolectomy, but I started from way back in the field. I had let the disease affect my lower colon and rectum disastrously before I was prepared to go through the op and have an ileostomy. But recover I did and now, at 70, I can travel overseas and lead a very active life - I spent yesterday morning forking seaweed up into a truck!

Look to the long term gains and try not to let small setbacks get you down. And always feel free come here for help or just to vent.
