My girl Rowan (4) has an ileostomy. Recently was hospitalized for gastroenteritis. They got everything working again. Introduced food with a higher dose of imodium and now her bowels are completely not moving and she is back with the same symptoms as she had with the first diagnosis of gastroenteritis, high fevers, vomiting, but now instead of pouring our poo she is completely stopped. They did flush the stoma today after 26 hours of no output. It did not get the bowels moving and was all liquid. Before the flushing was having bad intestinal cramping to the point of getting a low dose of morphine. (We don't like to give that bc it slows the bowels worse but her pain was that severe in the beginning of this episode.) She also has had a sunken proximal stoma (loop). It popped back out and was working until the food and imodium. Then retracted back again. Since the flush she is sleeping relax for the first time in 36 hours.

The basically treated her for stomach flu. Was about to release her and all symptoms came back including, stoma retraction, fevers, vomiting, pain, cramping. The exceptions are now no output vs high output and the imodium being introduced.

Need advice and do you think imodium can just stop the small intestines dead in it's tracks?

They have tested her for UTI, ran cultures, parasites, full blood work up everything is coming back good.

Help

Yes, immodium can certainly do this. But, there must be a problem there to begin with, to have it completely stop up. It cant be just immodium, unless it was given in a very high dose over a period of time?

I know immodium in low doses is given to newer ileostomists to help regulate you. I wonder if they need to flush her out again and have a scope done?
I am so sorry you and your girl are going through all of this!

Oh no! I am hoping and praying all is going well in the OR. Oh wow do I wish I could take your worry away.

Please update us on how things are?

FYI:
Crohn's Mom, dannysmom, DustyKat, imaboveitall, izzi'smom, Jenn, momoftwinboys, Tesscorm, Twiggy930, Johnnysmom, Dexky, Jessi

Figured I would forward since I put this originally in the stoma sub forum. I hope I tagged you guys right and this works.

She is in OR now. Said they might have to remove some of her small intestines if they twisted too bad. Scared. Her belly was really distended before they took her in. back on TPN afterwards. Praying no crohns, no crohns, no crohns.

Mary, wow, sending prayers that this can be resolved for Rowan!!! OMG, you have all been through so much; you must be at your wit's end!!! I hope you were able to get some rest last night. I so hope that the surgery can rectify the problem and she can get back to recovery!

Will be thinking and praying for you today! Please let us know how it goes (I'll be checking through the day, looking for good news!!)

:Karl:

ALL IS WELL. They did the take down. Idk if you all remember but after her colectomy she had this weird piece of fatty tissue petruding out of the top of her stoma. That fatty tissue was strangling her stoma and causing the blockage. All the intestines looked great to surgeon explored everything and decided rather than give her a new stoma he did the take down. She is asleep now and we are thankful for all the prayers and good vibes sent our way.

I was on the edge of my seat reading this tread (thanks for for the tag). I am soooooooo happy the outcome was good. That must have been terrifying for you both. I hope it is smooth sailing from here on out. You both deserve it 10 times over!

Spiking fevers and still having to vomit. They sid bc her bowel are asleep and cannot get rid of the gas. NG tube isn't pulling as much as they would like it to.

I'm hoping by the time you read this, that the gas is passing and she is recovering. And that you are getting some rest too!

The morphine is keeping her ileus. Unfortunately it's A choice of pain or no pain. Grrr. :(. Hoping tomorrow is better. I cannot get her to walk, talk or even blow a bubble. I have bribed, begged, and pleaded. Waiting SUX.

Thank you so much for tagging me so I could read this.

My heart was absolutely wrenching as I read through this thread. You and your baby girl have been through way too much!! I am praying and faithful that this take-down procedure will be a wonderful thing for the both of you, once the recovery time has ended. :) I hope her bowels wake up soon and you get to spend some happy bubble-blowing time together. :D

And HOORAY that it's not Crohn's!! :applause:

Oh Mary, So sorry I haven't been around much lately and just saw this.
Poor Rowan having to go through all of this again, and so soon :(
I'm happy they were able to do the take down. So, no signs of Crohns right ??
Has she had any movement yet? Is she able to get up and move around at all?
Poor baby. Poor momma.

Thinking of you both ! Hang in there :)

They looked and no signs of Crohns in small bowel. She had some gas and is pooing. Some incontenence bc she has all fluids going in right now. Stopped Morphine today, hoping for some good bowel sounds soon.

Oh, Mary. I am so sorry for all that you are going thrrough. I am glad that they did a takedown instead of a new stoma, but hope that things begin to improve...you girls have been through so much already!! (((HUGS))) <3 Feel better, Rowan!!

I'm so sorry to hear about everything you and your little one has been through.

I hope she starts to heal quickly and can be on her way, for both of your sakes!!!

big hugs to you and the little one.

She has a UTI and stoma site is red. Started IV antibiotics today. :( she is not talking to anyone. Just sitting there won't blow bubbles, won't walk, and she won't smile. Hoping tomorrow is better.

I have had two major surgeries inside a year. It is so hard the first few days. I counted the hours by. It was best when I was distracted, lots going on around me. I thought I didn't want to chat or join in but I did it without realising. Your little girl will too. Keep positive and she will take your lead. You are the right side of the surgeries now, so it is just time to recover and look forward. I wish you all a better day tomorrow too and look after yourself xx

Oh...UTI's are so painful...c'mon, Row, feel better sweetie!! We are rooting for you!!!
Omg KazT17 your siggy pic cracked me up lol!!

Well they just said the words "intermittent colitis" to me. I said Crohns, pouchitis, cuffitis what are you thinking and they said a form of IBD. Starting IV steroids tonight. Going to OR tomorrow to look for abcess and open wound for draining. Scared, and completely freaking out. I need a fucking miracle here, wtf? Still getting fevers with the Tylenol, Toradol being rotated every 3 hours. High 103+ fevers.
