I had illeocecal resection yesterday and am in terrible pain. Took 63 cm of ileum and terminal ileum. Was hoping for advice to get my bowels to wake up and wondered how long it took for everyone else's bowels to wake up. I'm so distended and in so much pain.

Hi, so sorry u r in pain. Have you been able to walk a little yet? Walking can help get things moving. Ask a nurse to help, ask to try and get as much walking in as you can handle.
Be sure to tell your dr, nurse, etc how you are feeling. Tell them if you r in pain.
I couldn't eat or drink until the intestines woke up, if i tried too early i did swell as you describe, and yes it was painful.
Also, as silly as this might sound, try to relax. Close your eyes and breath in slowly through your nose, blow out through your mouth. This is a slow, regular type breathing. It could help you relax. I know it is hard not to think of the pain, but try to think of something you like. A place that makes you happy, brings a sort of peace. While you breath, try to hold the image in your mind. Try not to think the pain will last today, tomorrow, etc. the pain is temporary. Try to focus on your body healing.
I hope this will help you a little.

It takes time to heal. Hang in there.

I am finally going, about 18 times in one day so far, but it's been all liquid coffee grounds! Is this normal?

That will be short term normal. As you heal it will get better. Give it time.

Stock up on high fiber foods and cut back foods with saturated fats (esp greasy or fried foods). The high fiber helps to produce regular BMs.
