I'm off to swallow the Sci-Fi pill!

Crohn's Disease Forum

Help Support Crohn's Disease Forum:

I did the same thing with our digital camera and a remote control. It was very painful to swallow and even worse on the other end. Of course the flash did not work so I never got any good pictures. The camera has a strange odor to it now.

Just in case anyone is going, Hmmm... I am joking.

Dan

Hahaha! I laughed. =P 30 more mins of wearing this blasted harness get up and I can go get it removed and go eat some real food.

hmm. i would be afraid to go out in public wearing a harness like that, in this post 9/11 world, lol.

Picture going thru airport security... sans harness, but with the pill cam still enroute... now, that could 'develop' into an interesting situation.

Uhm well...no word from doc yet but... I haven't passed the disco pill either yet. I hope its not up in there stuck. They warned me due to my inflammation that it may get stuck in there....

at the risk of sounding like a real dingbat lol, i had never heard of this pill cam thingywhatsit until i joined this forum. the whole concept fascinates me - i think its a really clever invention, and must be so much nicer than having miles of tubes stuck up or down you while some doctor tells you to relax......

kitty i hope it reappears sometime soon, and good luck with the results.

Hope it comes through okay and you have yourself a Hollywood production James Cameron would be proud of. :)

Hey dingbat, don't feel so bad. I never heard of it till I joined the forum. wonder if this technology is available in the UK and Canada... where perhaps our 'freebie' health services just don't/can't/won't offer it because of prohibitive costs? That's a question for any/all members from UK or Canada. Any doc ever suggest it? Have you had it done? or is it just available to those blessed with private health versus public health services? be interesting to find this out...

hmm after reading your post kev, i went googling, and found this...
http://finance.themarker.com/textDoc/stockNews/anl_839716.pdf

which reads as if it IS available on the uk national health service certainly. however, it has never been discussed or offered at any of my appointments, in fact it isnt that long since i had a normal endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. a relative of mine is in BUPA (private health scheme) and she hasnt been offered it either, only an endoscopy, for investigation into acid reflux.

so maybe, officially we have the go-ahead, but unofficially it is not being offered here....?

Hi guys, I had a Sigmoidoscopy before the pill, they couldn't reach the area where my inflamation is. Then they offered the pill. It was hell to swallow but if I understand right the pill costs around 600 for just the pill. Not sure about the reading etc.

In other news, I just called my DR because I have not heard back from them. It's also Easter weekend. I can bet that I won't hear back at all until Monday. And it's annoying to me because i have NOT passed the disco pill yet. I have been "checking" as best I could too! I think I would have seen it. Its possible it somehow got missed but I haven't really had anything solid enough to "hide" it and its a HUGE pill. I hope it doesn't hurt me sitting up inside me ...

It won't hurt you Kittee. I had mine in for a couple days ... you'll know if it gets stuck because you'll end up pretty damn sick or so I'm told. I did it twice and it takes some time to come through.

Yeah, you gotta look at it from the pill cams perspective.. Like, you ever been on one of those '6 cities in 7 nights' tours? rush, rush, rush, and what do you see?

nah, I think the pill cam is just taking it's time, getting lots of 'vacation shots', may even be doing a little graffiti... 'pill cam was here' in your upper intestine.. taking the 'scenic' route... After all, if you were that pill cam, would you be in any rush to get to the large colon.. I've heard it's a pretty shitty location (not just yours personally - no offence intended).. And the pill cams final destination
Call it porcelain palace if you will... it is the 'crapper/ no matter how you flush it

I think that the reason that the pill isn't used so much in the UK is that it's pretty imprecise. You can only see what the pill camera happens to be facing at the time so its pot luck really.

Colonoscopies are generally thought of as the 'Gold Standard'. It may not be pleasant, but it's the fastest and best way of getting a diagnosis.

The fact that it's cheaper might not be a factor at all! ;)

Hey guys, my pill is still on "tour" as Kev puts it =P

My Dr. Called and said "I haven't reviewed it yet, I will next week, if your backed up drink some liquid laxative."

WTF? ={

So as I thought, it will be next week before I find out anything. Thank god my Crohn's has been "quiet" this week.

Awww Kittee that aint funny at all in any aspect....

Did you tell him to drink the liquid lax? I told my asthma cons last week to drink elemental with the added protein amino acids and then tell me how wonderful it was. Should have seen his face and my GP roared when I told him what I said ;-)

Glad your tum has behaved this week but hope you get results on all aspects soon.

Thinking of you!

Kev, have never heard of the pill cam being offered here to anyone I know or me for that matter. Have always wondered why but Creepy Lurker makes a good point about it being hit and miss in relation to the direction it is facing at the time. Hadn't honestly thought of that one!!

they actually string the images it takes and turn it into a movie, I saw mine =)

Kittee -
I'm glad its been calm for you this week. Unless you are backed up I really wouldn't sweat it. I was told the same thing you were, I think they _have_ to tell you that. The battery that powers the thing dies after 8 hours so you're not going to see it strobing in the toilet anyways, otherwise I would have grabbed it and put it into a jar for the memories ..

Well, I think the cam has a place in diagnosis... Even with 'hit or miss' issues, the reality is it can go where no scope can reach (no matter which directon they take)

Also, inflamation is typically blotchy in crohns outbreaks, esp. in the upper GI tract. Even if it missed one or more areas, the moment it catches a pic of any inflamation where otherwise a doc couldn't scope it, it confirms the diagnosis.
IF it wasn't considered an 'effective' tool, it wouldn't be used. Why? Insurance providers who'd kick at the cost... I mean, an individual might pay for it without questioning whether it was worthwhile or not; as most accept a dr's say so. But insurance companies... No, those bean counters wouldn't stand for it, and they have their own 'doctors' ready to 'testify' that a procedure is too useless, or impractical, or not applicable, or experimental.. for it to be 'worth' covering.

Anyway... if a doc suggests (OK's) a laxative, esp. a mild, overnite laxative, it's probably a safe idea to take it.. Just might ease more than ones mind with it.

You know...it figures. I felt ok the past 3 days and WHAM, it hurts like a MOTHER today. I was also "backed up" for the past 3 days, and today I finally went.

And boy did I go...and go...and now it feels like I've swallowed a cup of glass and it's churning around tearing through my small intenstine.

THis is ridiculous. I tried laying on my side to ease it, no go, so now I'm sitting up trying to eat a few salty crackers to get something into my stomach and drinking some gatoraid. Dang it hurts.
